Here’s a use case: you load an LLM instance with a large amount of highly specific factual data over the course of several weeks (ingestion of a large number of documents, daily KT sessions, call with screen sharing transcription, docs artifact generation), and use that LLM to generate answers to people’s requests under high time pressure (urgent project deadline) which is prohibitive to even type the message, nevermind to comb though the data which you’d have to cram in your head, then never use again. Both sides are aware it involves AI. I have used this process against a control group (similar tasks, no AI use) and the result was clearly superior.


Use whatever nonproprietary open/libre systems that are out there. Right now, for mobile smartdevices that’s Lineage OS and Graphene OS. If you want GOS, that’s currently limited to Pixels. I’m not giving a shit about proprietary vendors, it’s a freedom thing. If I can buy open hardware, I will.


If I can’t have hardware that supports open source Android forks, then it means that I won’t buy it. I can work around with dumbphones, MiFi routers with tethered Linux or BSD portables. I will not use a proprietary system outside of work, full stop.


Sure, but I’m not interested in that ecosystem at all. My desktop and my tablet don’t run proprietary software. My phone runs a few apps which rely on sandboxed Play, but honestly, I don’t need them badly so I could stop tomorrow.

Look at the enormous processing resources of biological brains. Human brain is 2% of body mass but 20% of baseline metabolism – this is very expensive evolutionary. Neural hardware used for LLMs or just any scientific numerics accelerator is just a bad reinvention. Your argument reminds me of Minsky’s “5 MIPS is enough for AI”. Nope. You have to track a lot of state, its relationships and refresh it all very quickly. Computation is expensive.
