Mastodon is not called Twitter, and the vast majority of people have no idea what it is, unfortunately. A Mastodon instance called Twitter would be a great idea, although I think Mastodon doesn’t support all the protocols like Friendica does. But Friendica is too unlike Twitter.

Shame. A new Twitter that supports all the open protocols would have been cool. Fediverse with a name people recognise.

This is a great idea.

The resources used are but one of the problems with the modern uses of AI. Others include:

• Copyright and privacy. AI companies use copyrighted content and private data to train their models. Many companies have terms or user agreements that give them permission to use or sell any data on their systems. They collect data where they can, without regard for ownership, copyright or privacy.
• Fakes. We cannot trust what we see or read. Of course fake news and misinformation has been a problem for years, but genAI has turbocharged it, and now even video is becoming unreliable. We cannot trust anything anymore. Even appreciation of real art suffers because artists get accused of using AI even when it was hand made. Although the impact on politics is the biggest threat.
• Companies force employees to use it, even when employees don’t want it and it hurts the quality of their work. AI is often used as an excuse to fire people.
• The AI bubble dominates the economy. This cannot end well.

There are also legitimate and useful ways to use AI, and many of them could be very valuable, but that’s not what the industry or society is focusing on right now.

AI would probably be more acceptable if all of these issues were addressed.

Good practical examples are the car driver vs the Amazon driver. When you drive a car, you go where you want, but at the superhuman speed of a car. The Amazon driver has a computer telling them where to go, how to drive there, and even cameras to watch if you drive according to Amazon’s rules. The driver has become the extension of the computer, instead of the other way around. That’s a reverse centaur.

I don’t think for tue average user it really matters much. If you’ve got multiple screens of different sizes or refresh rates, Wayland is the way to go. If you’ve got multiple identical screens that you want to treat as a single big screen, X11 is perfect for that.

This is insane to me. Having a way to easily distinguish AI generated commits from human created ones makes a lot of sense, but lying that your honest, high quality handcrafted commit is AI slop makes it pointless.

That people feel they need to do this in order to protect their jobs is fucking insane and self destructive.

Why are there so many different open source office suites? Wouldn’t it be more effective if they joined forces? Or do they have incompatible visions?
