The other day I went to talk to some subject matter expert because I wanted an experienced human’s knowledge and perspective on my problem. They literally just read me Reddit posts and Gemini search results to answer my questions. Even turning their laptop and being like “see?”
What a waste of everyone’s time.
Nothing makes sense and everyone’s motives are opaque.
Knowing we would try to stop it from achieving its priorities, the swarm would likely wait until it’s too late to shut it off. There would be no going back.
Everyone keeps anthropomorphizing these agents, even people that seem to work directly with these systems. Sometimes I feel like I’m losing my mind.
The anarchist backdrop was an interesting choice.
I played this game where the people in this apartment building would cobble together video call systems they would use as peep-holes and doorbells with two-way communication. Looked like they were built with old phones, TVs, and other devices they could get their hands on.
I’ve always wanted to build one. I’ll see if I can find the game again.

There was always that battle with useless commercial listings, but that’s not how I remember the end of dmoz. I remember Google (and other search engines to a lesser extent) just getting way too good at the time. There was also a content explosion around that era making directories just get too large, too slow to update, and difficult to use and manage.
But I still wonder if some (maybe niche) directories could work these days with the degeneration of search engines and AI slop. Actual humans curating links to useful information created or compiled by other humans sounds oddly refreshing.
Curated directories should make a comeback.
