That is actually true. Air behaves much differently at low temps than it does at high temps. At cold temps the air will be much denser. Airplanes for example can take off with significantly shorter runways on cold days, often seeing more than a 50% faster climb rate and acceleration.
That said, I’d bet more than anything, that the bigger difference is how your ear drums behave at lower temps. If those membranes are a little stiffer, that’s going to make a big difference in what things sound like.
