4·29 days agoThey never list titles or condition of the books so I just assume they are the same books you can find in big piles at the dump mostly old text books and technical books. I love books I own hundreds of them, but people don’t buy enough 2nd hand books there are sites where you can buy books by the yard so you can have a neat and matching library, there are warehouses full of books to rent for movie sets. Noone realy cares they just want to be upset.

8·3 months agoThat’s cause people think changing the password all the time is safer, all it does is force people to choose the easiest password or write them on a piece of tape under the mouse mat.

11·3 months agoBeer bottles not so much, I’ve been hit with a beer bottle and a wine bottle, hurt but adrenaline is a hell of a drug. I have seen a guy do the super cool break the bottle on a table to threaten a guy once, he needed 20 or so stitches when the neck of the bottle shattered in his fist. But it did stop the fight.

2·3 months agoOne of my favorite sci-fi books has the main character going through the thousands of paper files stored in his space ship.
But computers still work with our current understanding of physics, I’m far from being an expert but without magic I don’t see a way for faster then light or time travel to work.

9·3 months agoI like watching suspect interviews, all the cops follow the same script, if people would just shut up and ask for the lawyer far fewer crimes would be solved.
I tell my kids to treat cops like vampires, never let them in the house and sticking to your rights is garlic to them.
Pretty sure the movie studios did that.
I’m like that when I’m not stoned, which is probably why as a 50 year old man I mostly watch romcoms and animation. With romcoms the set and lighting is straight forward so it doesn’t distract me, unless they are outside in the “tropics” then all the wrong plants and animals bother me.
I’ve noticed that kids become adults, and a lot of them stop growing emotionally just after puberty, I have a fake face book profile that I occasionally check up on the people I grew up with, every one of them is exactly the same as they were at 18, they even were the same clothes. The only thing that has changed is there is a lot less hairspray and several of them are dead. They even all meet up every 4th of July, they invite me to it at every funeral I attend.
I honestly feel the investors know it’s not real, but if you get enough rich guys to all say "this is worth money " the banks will give them loans on it, as long as they all stick together it will always go up.

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•20 Jobs that people once thought were irreplaceable are now just memoriesEnglish

4·3 months agoNah that’s not how cops work, it would go like this.
“The suspect was wearing blue jeans and a black sweatshirt”
“The guy we have in custody is wearing a teal tee and a kilt”
“Exactly, that is what a person would change into to try and get away”
I have watched so many body cam videos that I can promise this is how it would go.
In most cases they pick the guy who they think did it and then work on proving it.
There is a video where the cops interegate a mentally ill man for hours “because he murdered his father” when he asks if his dog is ok they tell him, she is now but she will have to be put down if you don’t help us on this case" I think he ends up sorta confessing, so the cops call his sister, like he had begged them to do in the beginning, the father was safe and sound at sisters house.
For all the people who will read this and say “bullshit” I found the video for you.
The fucking thing that keeps me on my meds is the fear of our leagal system.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•If you could take back one thing you've said, what would that be?
3·4 months agoI’m 56 and in all my years there is only one conversation I would like to redo and that was when I was 17.
My eldest brother was in another state helping his dad fix up a house. He called home around midnight and was going on about how I should take care of myself and a bunch of other stuff, he was mentally ill and it was obvious he had gone off his meds. He kept calling till like 3 in the morning and I was sick of hearing it and just wanted to go to sleep so I could make it to work in the morning.
So last time he calls he is going on for 15 min or so about “hey 1d10 don’t worry about anything, dad will take care of it, my dad will take care of it” so I kinda snaped and said "good, can I sleep now? I hung up the phone and went to sleep, less then a hour later my mom wakes me up to tell me my brother killed himself.
I didn’t go to work that morning, I didn’t go to work for a year. I just went fishing. My brother loved fishing and always tried to get me to go but I didn’t fish and never went with him. After the funeral I took his fishing gear and went fishing almost every day from dawn to dusk for an entire year.

1·10 months agoYes there is, it is polymerized fats and oils that build up over time.

No I’m not, there is no evidence you even exist.
