There is some kind of incentive structure to look this fucked up. There is a whole different world where looking like a parody of yourself is virtue signaling, shows that you can afford to look like such a cartoon. It’s the same reason maga face is a thing. Humans aren’t attracted to it physically, but you can tell they that they have enough money to do that to themselves and not have to feel embarrassed.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Portainer 3.0 is coming, and here's what it means for you — PortainerEnglish
2·7 days agoIt’s personal preference. I grew up staring at green screens. I am at home pawing through config files, I like seeing things from the bottom up.
So, portainer was a nice easy button to ease my transition from VMs to containers, but just like VMWare, I started on the GUI, eventually moved to CLI.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Portainer 3.0 is coming, and here's what it means for you — PortainerEnglish
4·7 days agoPortainer was a great start into docker, but it’s so much easier and better to just use compose and cli. Lazydocker if you really want point and click.
I still have my old install running on my homebrew NAS, but all it’s doing is running plex and a Minecraft server. I need to rebuild, at which point it goes.
Sorry portainer, I appreciate the start, but I’ve got it from here…
Agreed, this is pretty much what they were back when I used them. This was well before tinder or whatever the big one that disrupted the industry is/was.
Funny enough, despite me being extremely happily married for over 18 years now, I still cannot get my damned email off their spam lists. I’ve abandoned that address so I don’t much care, but they really don’t seem confident in their matches apparently :)

10·8 days agoBarely counts but my former roommate dated a girl who was trying to break in. She danced and stripped, and had her own website. I never looked though, wasn’t the type I cared to see naked…

5·8 days agoMinnesotans don’t cry, we’re tougher than that, or at least have realized that if we do they either freeze or turn to steam.
I met my wife on a dating app, but it was over 20 years ago now. I suspect that like everything they all have evolved to capture your eyeballs as much as possible. Back when I used them, they were about meeting people, they hadn’t yet gamified them with the swipes and so forth.
So, not surprised, a little sad to hear it even, since I can’t imagine being a young person and trying to meet new people these days. Then again, as an aspiring Luddite these days, I hope people find a way to connect in real life.

1·12 days agoBecause they are short and my ceilings are tall. We also cook a lot and with kids, smoke happens. So, the requirement from the wife was being able to silence remotely.

8·13 days agoYeah, I went with LG because I wanted to try an OLED, and the price was right. Never buying anything from them again, and whatever tv I do buy next I’ll disable all the shit from the get-go.
I’ve always been privacy minded, but things have gotten so bad, and I’ve gotten complacent. Hell, I just bought a connected smoke alarm system because my wife and kids needed something they can mute remotely. Should have just bought a stick instead.
I need to replace my WiFi, about time I get one with real VLAN support, so I can build an isolated guest/IoT network.

10·13 days agoIt’s not super specific, and makes sense for where I saw it, but I’ll never forget the Wisconsin tourist trap I drove past as a kid that has a big sign out front advertising “Cameras, Cheese and Guns”.

29·13 days agoI thought I had disabled everything but mine was still connected to WiFi. Thanks for the reminder. I disconnected it and blocked it at the router.
Tired of doing this for so many devices. We truly live in a full on surveillance state.

Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•Is Linux on a laptop with an Intel Processor + an NVidia GPU still the absolute fucking nightmare it was 10 years ago?English
1·13 days agoI’m m running bazzite on an Alienware m15 laptop, with an i7 & a 1070ti. Works great, no issues at all. When my last machine died, I rolled the dice on an HP Envy refurb machine with an i9 and a 4070 Ti Super (cheapest I could find with 16gb vram). I daily drive LMDE on it, also works perfectly. This is a desktop though to be fair.

Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•PS5 without discs: why devs are "furious" at SonyEnglish
10·13 days agoThe public are idiots, consumption will continue.
I’ll second bazzite. I have it on an old laptop as the family machine, so it’s kid approved. I don’t personally love it, but I have nothing bad to say about it, I’m just a greybeard who prefers my boring LMDE.
So, it’s one of my go-to suggestions for a good, daily drive-able step into Linux. I like that the immutability makes it easier to recover, for when they inevitably call me for tech support (haven’t had to rely on it much yet, but that’s the theory anyway).

Technology@lemmy.world•US to announce sharply lower vehicle fuel economy requirementsEnglish
5·17 days agoI actually replaced my suv with a full sized truck last year. Funny enough my average mileage went up from 17 to 28mpg. Hybrids rule.
(Yes, 28 is still shit, but much better and more useful shit than I had before).
I miss practical effects. They are just so much more raw. The highly polished CGI that is everything these days is just visually boring to look at. I am not interested in the next flashy gimmick, anything that you can dream up is now possible to show on screen, so the fast paced stupid action doesn’t hit home at all anymore.
