  • Buy ya gotta admit their point that streaming still costs way less than cable …… assuming you’re subscribing to what you want rather than try to recreate

When I first switched, the math said I cut my costs in third while getting much better internet service and three streaming services

    • Gigabit internet + 3 * streaming service == 1/3 (200M internet + cable)

The math is still positive but much less so, however streaming services attempts to alienate me are succeeding - I only subscribe to one streaming service and am considering giving it up. Enshittify away and see what that gets you

I pay for Netflix family plan but since Netflix has decided my kids are no longer in my family when they are at their moms or at college…… I no longer need that. Clear cause and effect

  • Arguably carnivores have already cut meat intake, at least red meat, to greater impact than vegetarians.

While I’m going by anecdote rather than data

    • vegetarians/vegans are a small minority so limited impact
    • many people I know have cut back on at least red meat for health or environmental reasons.

Basically one fewer burger a week by 100 people has more impact than one person not eating meat at all

  • The arguments are usually that fish aren’t animals or more clearly insects aren’t animals, similar to how plants aren’t animals even if they react to damage. Very easy to argue.

I’ve seen arguments that whatever sentience fish may have, it’s too low level to be aware of pain. I don’t buy that but clearly fish have a simpler central nervous system than mammals. Also easy to argue.

  • there’s been little progress toward creating the unfathomably long carbon fiber tether

When space elevators were first discussed, there were no materials that could possibly be used. Now we have carbon nanotubes that may be strong enough. That’s huge progress.

But yeah, the political issues will prevail. If we can’t even agree enough to build California high speed rail, think of the impossibility of a major infrastructure project several orders of magnitude bigger and more complex, several orders of magnitude more costly, and where a failure is essentially a weapon of mass destruction affecting hundreds of millions of people.

  • On the surface, this could be entirely legit, not worth the outrage.

    I can easily believe

    • regulations are not ready for self-driving vehicles
    • a manufacturer decided some required equipment is not suited for a car meant to be self-driving only
    • the manufacturer self-certified, with exemptions where there is no regulatory framework yet.
    • government agency sees that and starts an investigation to see if they agree

Even before you get into what you think of this specific manufacturer and whether they’re really ready for self-driving, this is a “normal” process

I’m more worried about regulations defining what self driving needs to be capable of and tests to qualify it

Whether a cyberCab is capable of safely self-driving is a different question from whether a self-driving vehicle is required to have a steering wheel
