Turns out I was wrong about modifications being needed since linux-xtensa has now been merged into mainline linux: Kernel Github Repo

I know the ESP32-S3 can technically boot linux, however idk if it counts as “mainline” since I think the kernel does need to be modified slightly
Edit: Turns out the mainline kernel does include support for xtensa CPUs now, so ESP32-S3 is supported
Beeper Funk because its the only one I can name lol

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Maybe the real "Great Filter" is that once a species gets collectively smart enough they realize their own planet is a far better investment than extension into the cosmos.
161·3 months agoOther positive things to mention about space exploration:
- If humanity spreads out across the stars, there is less of a danger for us dying from ANY centralized disaster including the cosmic ones and those we might cause ourselves
- Similar to the above, it will be harder to create centralized governments due to extreme distances and just communication limits set by the speed of light; ergo, if some colony falls prey to a dictatorship it is unlikely to spread easily across all of humanity
- We have lots of questions about the universe which may be answered if we travel it. And, when scientific discoveries are made they often have applications outside their initial field.
- We have lots of questions about biology that living in novel environments would teach us (also lots of other scientific fields too of course)
- Forming colonies will force many small groups of people to work collectively, causing those colonies to form a sense of community—something that is lacking in humanity presently
- Isolation caused by communication limits will be scary but also will decrease our access to 24/7 terrible non-local news (inhibiting our ability to doomscroll) which will likely have a positive impact on everyone’s mental health (…maybe not on earth but in the colonies at least)
- Exploration becoming a possibility will also likely make people happier just by showing that humanity has a future. Also, knowing that there are places you can go to escape society all together is quite a freeing thought for some
- Last but not least WE GET TO GO TO SPACE!

4·3 months agoWoah hey now, there are definitely anarchists who participate in / cooperate with the DSA. Plus “Food Not Bombs” is an anarchist collective so we definitely do our fair share of praxis
I read it as smørrebrød at first and was very confused at why there was sunscreen and not rye bread and fish

Hey wait Cyrillic is a script; does being able to write in the script mean you can speak it? Because movie makers who want fancy looking titles certainly don’t know what the symbols actually sound like.
Are there any animals whose sexual reproduction relies on consuming the mate?
Like spiders and mantis will eat their mates but its not required for insemination. The closest i can thing of is angler fish getting like absorbed into the body of the female but thats through skin contact not being swallowed.

Edit: Nevermind i was wrong, also if he actually dried it out completely someone might want to call bomb disposal.
Also I wonder if just sprinkling a tiny amount of a metal catalyst like platinum or osmium would be enough to form salts and then detonate the whole thing

Hey pal if you’re working 16hr days on a fire camp in the middle of nowhere Nevada, pajamas aren’t exactly practical. Also, somehow it goes from 110°F during day to 30°F at night so forget sleeping in only underwear.
I knew a few guys who’d not only wear jeans but wear them beneath their nomex (fire resistant cargo pants) to stay warm at night. Honestly during the day you just wear nomex because they’re more breathable than jeans anyway, so in a way the jeans were only worn for sleep once the supply tent got set up
People like/dislike different things. A life that may seem decent to you could be hell for someone else.
If you can justify euthanasia for those with pain you understand like chronic illness, then you should justify euthanasia even for those with pain you don’t understand like being in perfect health but not wanting to be alive anymore.
I think there should be buffers in place like a waiting period and psychological evaluations to prevent rash actions by people who are simply bipolar or having an incredibly bad day etc.; however, the ultimate decision of whether one’s life is not worth living is a decision that can only rightfully be decided by that individual.

9↑↑↑…↑↑9
Would be
near infinitelymuch much much larger than just repeated hexation of 9(Of course even just 9↑↑↑↑9 is too big to be written in the universe, so all of these numbers are practically a microdose of infinity)
Hey I’m sure plenty of us do, we just don’t wear the clothes to show it. If I wear a crop top women think I’m gay and that’s unfortunately counterproductive

11·4 months agoWhile non locality is weird, it can’t actually be used to transmit information. Any attempt to force an entangled particle into another state breaks the entanglement. So you can’t really transmit any information between the two.
Nice to meet another aro in the wild

Almost every religion you have ever heard of was probably based on or is still a religion that practices the ritual sacrifice/murder of a living thing for some god. (Aka violence for holy purposes)
All over the world religions have abounded which demand Lambs or birds or even the hearts of one’s fellow humans to worship/sate/bribe gods.
Violence is not objectively “unholy” because “holiness” itself is subjective to the culture in which the acts are practiced.
