There’s certainly some very specific forms of toxicity here, and the leftist purity tests and infighting is certainly a big part of it.

That being said, I think the Internet has a broad toxicity problem. When everyone is faceless and you only know them by a single comment, it’s much easier to cast them as a specific stereotype or an enemy. It’s just a feature of how humans socialize, and there really isn’t a way to remove it from the experience of the Internet.
