It’s functionally impossible to ethically buy all the things you need and want. Yes we should all try to do our best and not just give up, but the actual solution is with systemic changes in our laws and regulations and how we set up our society. Everyone should focus on that long-term goal, while making small changes to their behavior. But that simply isn’t feasible for everyone to do and that is the bigger issue.

Capitalism requires there to be a threat of what happens if you “don’t work hard enough” or don’t play ball with those in power. Nevermind that most homeless people aren’t that way due to laziness or anything they did wrong, just unlucky situations or medical debt or being laid off at an inconvenient time or something.

It would be far cheaper to our country to have free housing, UBI, universal healthcare and social programs everywhere than what we are doing now, but what we are doing now makes about 1,000 people INSANELY wealthy at the expense of the other 342,000,000 people in the country, so that’s what we keep doing for some stupid reason.

Maybe one day everyone will wake up and stop enabling systems that create this shithole.

Fairly sure you can “opt out” from being shown if you live at an address and fill out some form. I think it’s available, but not exactly advertised or promoted as an option.

I’ve seen random neighborhoods where 1 or 2 houses will randomly be blurred out.

My entire department, and honestly probably 95% of my company do all of our work on a computer on the network, that’s the only requirement, it can be a PC at a desk on site or a laptop on WiFi at a coffee shop or home or the beach for that matter.

My company did the big RTO mandate last year after 6 years of WFH since Covid first started. Those 6 years marked some of the highest productivity and highest job satisfaction ever.

Then the C suite decided they either didn’t like not being able to watch their worker bees go, or maybe they also had financial investments in the commercial district (conflict of interest if they do IMO) or maybe they got lonely? Or maybe they just read a stupid article that told them they should assert control by making their employees lives harder, who knows? But ours, like so many, all did it seemingly blindly like a fad, with no real reason or goal and just a vague empty promise of “collaboration and culture” whatever THAT even means.

Also really funny that in the same paragraph they will praise “cloud data”, “cloud AI”, “remote servers”, but the humans can’t be remote because reasons.

The real sore point that I resent VERY much is that half the company is out of state, so exempt, including my supervisor. So now me and my team commute in to an office to sit in a sad cube by ourselves and then we still have to join a video call for every meeting, but doing that from a conference room is hell compared to a headset and your own laptop, not to even mention all the technical issues we keep having while everyone at home stares blankly waiting for us, it’s so dumb.

All I know is for me and my team and every single person I’ve talked to, the collaboration is so much worse in-person. The communication is worse. They wave their hands and say “collaboration”, but then if one person is talking on the floor it is disrupting 50 people that can easily hear every word. The morale is worse. Everything takes so much long to do. So much time and money is wasted sitting in cars in traffic for no reason. I don’t get it. It was a huge win-win when we all went WFH. We worked more, did more, were happier and more productive, saved money, saved time, communication was better since everyone was on the same level field.

Mandating RTO is wild to me, it feels like going back to typewriters in a world of laptops, because “well we used typewriters in the past, it’s the way it’s been done”

Then on the flip side, some people want and do better in a central office, fine, have that available, but don’t mandate everyone does it. It should be up to each worker or their managers to figure out the actual need and what is best. “One size fits all” doesn’t work, it fits 1 person and excludes 10.

I learned how to work hard and be good at my job and actually get things done, not just look busy and act important.

Jokes on me, the entire management make 100x more than me and do 100x less. And they get to spend hundreds of millions on stupid projects that are horrible ideas, but I have to cut back on my area to save $100.

I should have put all my stat points into soulless bullshit corporate jargon and none into intelligence.

I memorized the whole thing in school. I’ve forgotten parts, but it really has stuck with me since. But it took a decade or so before the real true impact of it hit home.

Like, as a teen I understand it, King built a statue, was a powerful proud king, had everything, blah blah, now it’s all but gone and only pieces of a statue even remain.

But, the impact of it hit as an adult.

Not even the greatest of kings or warriors or sages can escape the slow erosion of time and sand and all things crumble to dust.

It’s both depressing and empty feeling, but also freeing in a way. Optimistic Nihilism I guess? It’s all going to be dust one day, so be nice and have fun and be whimsical and silly and do what you want.

It does at least give me comfort that even the big evil rulers of our age will one day be long forgotten and but a crumbled relic and some lines in a rotting history book that no one bothers to read anymore.

Everything is becoming 1984 dystopian, everything is being tracked and monitored and videoed and data collected on you all just to maximize how much they can exploit out of you. And we work our asses off for all that and take home just enough pay to hopefully not starve or go homeless. (And more than ever are sinking below that baseline)

And the C suit morons STILL can’t figure out why millions of workers are at an all-time low morale?

Incredible. These guys could throw a rock at the ground and miss. They would starve in a grocery store. They couldn’t find a tree in a forest. And other mocking jests.

Crazy thought. Let people WFH again. Pay them a living wage at MINIMUM. Reign in the AI bullshit and only use it where it makes sense, don’t force it. Treat your employees as humans. Don’t be evil. Tell the truth. Value their contributions and skill and knowledge and ethics. Stop punishing them and instead set them up for success and enable them and watch what happens.

It’s a win-win.

Office/computer/phone type jobs get to stay home, satisfaction and productivity goes up.

In person jobs now have far less cars on the roads every day, rush hour isn’t as much of a problem anymore, less time and $ wasted stuck in traffic.
