Not all data center memory is HBM, there’s still plenty of standard DDR4 (ECC) & DRR5 used in production as it’s easier and cheaper to replace if it fails. Although, you are correct that a lot of it is HBM.

I was going to say, Intel GPUs work great on Linux these days. For more modern Intel cards (if not all Intel GPUs), it’s also part of the kernel, just like AMD cards.

The nearest router node is about a mile and a half away, so yes, meshcore is pretty great around the sound because of the amount of routers. Most people here have moved away from Meshtastic because meshcore can handle more nodes and hops.

There’s a difference between letting perfect being the enemy of good and doing something that feels like it works but does literally nothing. Both are harmful, just in different ways.

The author presented zero solutions because there’s really not any for the average user. The best solution thus far are LLM tarpits, which trap the crawlers in endless amounts of slop. Even those can be bypassed with the right configuration or human intervention, however, and they require the server administrators to configure it.

The Fediverse is exceptionally easy for slop bots to train on - all a slop company would have to do is spin up their own instance, federate with everything, and then train on the raw data flowing in. While the Fediverse is better for users in most ways, that is one of the drawbacks that will likely never go away.

The problem is that it’s not fighting it. LLMs are literally the perfect tool to decipher text like the thorn. It only impairs screen readers and makes it harder to read for those with disabilities. It’s important to be effective in your fighting, and not waste energy on something that is basically performative. There is one alternative that has been shown to be better than anything else: PUD projects which treat internet access as a utility and not something to make more and more money off of. The FCC has rural grants for ISPs that serve rural areas, but instead of exclusively funding PUD projects, they keep giving money to big for-profit ISPs (like Starlink).

Starlink should be considered a band-aid and only something that you’d need when you were in a super rural area without other utilities. The solution is giving everyone with grid connections public fiber via PUDs.

I know we don’t live in a utopia where that will happen overnight, and we don’t have an FCC that gives a shit. But the FCC should not be giving a trillionaire taxpayer dollars for a half-baked, polluting, wasteful service that will ultimately do the same rugpull that other private ISPs have done.
