AT the start of COVID, I bought shares in an airline because I figured that once lockdown was over, everyone would go crazy traveling everywhere and the airline stock would skyrocket (pun intended.)

I still maintain that everyone should have to do one year of retail work, kind of like national service. People who have worked retail are almost always nice to other retail workers because they know the kind of shit they have to deal with every day.

That’s what I do. I upgraded the SSD in my Steam Deck to a 1tb (before the prices went nuts, thankfully) and then ended up with a spare 256gb drive. I put it in an enclosure and installed NixOS on it as a sort of second system. It doesn’t really do anything super important, it’s more a learning project to get comfortable with NixOS without interfering with my daily driver. I could have just as easily done it in a VM but what can I say, I’m a tinkerer lol

It’s also a book that I don’t think could be adapted into anything. I’m not sure how you would even make it an eBook.

Person in Canada here! This is true, mainly because of the whole “constantly threatening to invade us, shit-talking the Prime Minister non-stop, starting an idiotic trade war and trying to rename our lakes” thing.

I live in Canada in one of those places. Once the area I live in was on the news because it was colder than Mars that day lol.

I have no idea if this is helpful or not (and sorry if it isn’t) but I generally tend to approach things as like:

Can I do anything about it right now?

If YES —> Do the thing ----> Don’t worry about it.

If NO ----> There’s nothing to do ----> Don’t worry about it.

Obviously that’s super simplified and doesn’t apply to everything, but I find it helps to just sift out the small-medium sized annoyances.

So for example with your boat ticket:

If you have proof you paid ----> Send proof -----> Nothing more to do.

Could they reject it anyway? ----> Maybe but you can’t control that -----> Nothing more to do.

And then if they do reject it, you can start the loop again from there, which I guess would either be escalate or just let it go etc.

Especially in terms of wiping the drive like OP is asking. If their goal is simply wiping data, they can just put a drill though it. Or if it’s to wipe and replace the OS, they could presumably whip the drive out, format it on something else and do what they like with it, then put it back in the original computer or something like that.

I heard someone say the other day that most of the time when there’s a ‘bad’ technology it starts off as something good that everyone likes, and gradually becomes bad over time, like social media. But AI is something a bit more rare in that it came out and the majority of people didn’t especially want or like it, but it really feels like it’s being ‘forced’ into existence, so to speak. Which makes me think there’s something else going on.

The Big Lebowski is sort of like this too I think. I actually can’t remember if he even gets his rug back lol, but also it doesn’t matter.

Honestly, just giving everyone one free face punch per year would be a good start.

TBH I just set up a Thunderbird filter to move anything from their domain into my bullshit folder. Takes about the same amount of time as unsubscribing and I know for sure it’ll work. 👍
