The crux of that article is buying into Heidegger‘a definition of a tool, specifically, “thing that lets you do something you wouldn’t otherwise have been able to.” If you disagree with that premise, the article doesn’t hold up.
Tools aren’t about letting you do something you would otherwise not have been able to do, they are simply a force multiplier for capability or efficiency. You still need knowledge and skills to do the thing.
I am not a carpenter. My knowledge and skills are near zero. This multiplied by any number is still damn near zero, and I have no idea about the culture, safety, or history of carpentry. I’m not stupid enough to jump right into using an lathe without a lot of research or someone to guide me, because I’m not a fucking moron.
People with programming knowledge and skills using AI will eventually figure out a workflow that works. Laypeople using AI to vibe code? They’re probably fucking morons. Sure, maybe even most of the time, it will be fine. But eventually, someone is going to be degloved.


If you ever do computer shit, buy one decent length Thunderbolt 5 cable. It will be much more clearly marked, and it’s compatible with USB4.
USB-C is a fucking nightmare, just treat them all as charging cables unless it is explicitly obvious.

I have one smaller box in the office with “modern” cables that are still useful, a bigger box in a closet with duplicates and less occasionally useful cables, then a last box with… vintage computer shit that I never touch.
Box one still has one of each of USB-C to Lightning, USB-C to 2.0 Micro, USB 3.1 A-to-B cable, and USB 3.1 C to micro-B, and a few thunderbolt 4 and 5 cables (fully compatible with USB-C, but easier to identify high speed certified cables than the utter USB-C compliance nightmare). Any other USB-C cables are assumed to be charging cables. It also has a few CAT6A, DisplayPort, and Ultra-certified HDMI cables, as well as a few still-useful dongles to round it out.
I somewhat recently relegated all of my USB-A chargers and cables, all of my USB-A to lightning, micro-, and mini- USB cables, and all non-ultra HDMI cables to box two.
When I moved, all coax cables and pre-CAT6 Ethernet cables got moved to box three.


Why would you be concerned about this? If you are running a server, it makes perfect sense to expose API endpoints to allow other tools an interface to those services.


The only issue of note is the binary blob, and NVIDIA’s refusal to digitally sign the driver. Thus if you have Secure Boot enabled, you need to take the added steps to resign your drivers every system update, which is a pain, or disable secure boot, which may lock you out of some future stream games.

At a really high level, SATA III had a 6Gbps data rate (8 bits per Byte, so 750MB/s) so most SATA SSDs were giving you 550MB/s at the most.
Conversely, NVMe is usually a PCIe x4 slot, which tops out at 4GB/s. Most M.2 NVMe drives will give you 3200MB/s, which is easily six times faster.
Edit: for a fun point of reference, old HDDs were about 60MB/s, with high latency on top of that due to seek time.


This is pretty interesting as a half measure towards unified memory. Obviously the PCIe bus is the bottleneck here, but using the 16x slot should be slightly faster than using your NVMe.
