  • Why are coders so desperate to replace themselves with ai? Like you rarely hear of actual artists or writers using ai in such large waves as coders do. Sure you’ll get lots of people who have an idea for a story just have an llm do the work for them, but its less common to hear about established authors doing that. Just like how people who have an idea for a game will just have an llm write the code. Meanwhile professional coders seem thrilled to outsource their work to ai. Why???

Edit: is it bc they don’t see their work as art like artists and writers do? Bc it is a form of art just like how mathematical formulas and stuff can be art

(Obligatory not all coders. I know there are many that hate ai and hate being required to use it at work, but its really starting to feel like they’re in the minority)

There have been a lot of progressive wins and upcoming wins in the past year or so. You’ve got Zohran Mamdani for mayor in Nyc. Dr. Adam Hamawy won the dem primary for New Jersey House rep. In Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed is polling very well and is very hopeful to win the Senate seat when the actual vote happens. Mamdani’s campaign has made it very clear nationally to many folks who were generally centrist or vote blue no matter who types that better candidates are out there. And that motion is continuing with campaigns like Dr. Adam Hamawy and Abdul El-Sayed’s and many others across the country. There is a progressive movement in the USA and this is the perfect time to make real change happen. Will it be easy? No. Is the system working against them? Yes. But we are still making change happen despite the obstacles. Celebrate the victories you get and then work towards the next one instead of giving up bc of one or two losses

Also, I’m getting really sick of people who aren’t from the USA spreading doomerism about the USA and saying shit can’t be fixed, and some of them even saying we need a violent revolution (not saying you’re saying that part). First of all, the USA isn’t the only place that’s fucked. Lots of countries have conservative movements that are getting out of control. I know the USA is a global superpower, but also, focus on fixing your own damn countries bc we’re focused on fixing ours and your doomer commentary doesn’t help! Second, a lot of people only hear the worst shit about the USA. They don’t hear about the wins and the progress so they just say we’re fucked without looking at the whole picture. Are things bad? Yes, but there’s real hope and change happening too

Actually it’s “primary out the do-nothing democrats when progressive candidates are on the ballot and vote for the lesser of two evils if there’s no viable progressive candidate.” Also, if you want better candidates then help progressive candidates campaign as early as you learn about them. That could mean volunteering and door knocking, donating, or just spreading the word about them. Do what you’re able to do as enthusiastically as you can

If you’re gonna quote me then don’t leave out the relevant parts: “it’s telling people to utilize the social circle they have, and for some people that might not be much at all. And that’s okay, this message isn’t directly speaking to them.” I’d really like to repeat this point here that things don’t have to apply to every situation. Just bc you can think of a scenario where this post might be less relevant, doesn’t mean it’s bad. This is like going onto posts about nuts being healthy or recipes that have peanuts in them and angrily commenting “not everyone can eat nuts >:( some people are allergic.” The post isn’t for them and that’s okay

Also, you’re being defeatist. Just because someone lives in a food desert or has a food addiction, should they give up on eating healthy? Should they say they can’t help it and not try to be healthy? No, it’s obviously still worth it to do what they can. That’s going to mean different things for different people, but the end goal of eating healthy is still the same. Similarly, just because some people are socially isolated doesn’t mean they should give up. They should still try to develop social relationships. It’s not gonna happen overnight, but trying to slowly make progress is better than just accept social isolation. Nobody deserves to be isolated and alone

Also, you say this doesn’t materially help anyone, but if the people around those who are socially isolated start reaching out to people for help instead of ai, then that could include the socially isolated person. (No matter how alone someone may feel, they do know people and people know them, there’s just no connection. They’re not friends but they could be neighbors, classmates, or colleagues. And this post is encouraging people to reach out to those around them.) So yes, this post could actually help encourage people to reach out to socially isolated people

They’re not gonna get better at socializing by using ai for everything instead of talking to people. I don’t really have any true friends. I’ve got family, which is great, but I don’t have any friends that I go out and hang with or online friends that I game with or anything like that. I’m shit at socializing. But when I have something I want to do, I don’t just give up and use ai, I either try to reach out to an acquaintance or I look for an online community to ask for help. And yeah, that comes with the risk of getting a negative reaction and often my anxiety gives me a hell of a time but it’s the only way I’m gonna get better at it. And maybe eventually I’ll have done it so much that it’ll be normal to me instead of the horribly daunting thing it currently is

This isn’t telling people that “they secretly actually DO have a social circle they’re just not utilizing” it’s telling people to utilize the social circle they have, and for some people that might not be much at all. And that’s okay, this message isn’t directly speaking to them. The heart of it still remains: it’s better to turn to people than ai. And if you don’t know anyone, then try to meet or find someone. If it’s hobby related then see if there’s a local group (like a local knitting or book club) or try to find an online community. It’s scary as shit, but it’s worth it

  • It really depends on where you live in the USA. Where I live theres definitely people with guns but it’s unusual to see someone actually carrying one outside their home. Now my cousins live like 1-2 hours away (still in the same state) and it’s super common there for people to carry their gun on them at all times for some fucking reason. So my cousins are way more used to seeing guns than my siblings and I are
