Technology@lemmy.world•‘We’re not going to back down’: tiny Portland B&B stands up to Airbnb’s legal bid to ‘monopolise’ letters ‘bnb’English
21·3 days agoUSA companies always try to make it everybody else’s problem.
If you put them in a physical file and it gets jostled they go out of order and you have a problem. You want them in stacks.
I think technically it’s only a file when it’s managed by the system itself (reading, writing, modifying, storing) so punch cards are not files.

Technology@lemmy.world•AI CEOs say they need to slow the pace of development. But will they?English
212·3 days agoAI doesn’t work like advertised and investors will lynch them so they’re seeking government intervention as protection.
Well, if you go back far enough you might encounter punch cards or even switches, but then again you’re not taking about modern computers anymore.
It’s basically like setting of a nuclear explosion at that site. A big one, getting close to the Tsar Bomba. Everything nearby including the meteor turns to plasma and vapor, and that creates a shockwave that blows out everything nearby not instantly vaporized.

Technology@lemmy.world•OpenAI boss and Elon Musk back calls to put brakes on ‘reckless’ AI developmentEnglish
4·4 days agoHalf a year ago Musk was saying this is a hard take-off for AI, what means AI would improve itself and you basically can’t stop it anymore. Now he says he wants a pause. The hard take-off seems to have fallen flat.
Male, breathing, beating heart. You’re turned on, there is no other way.
That time when working more hours actually gave you more pay and a raise, and all at a single job. Yeah, they don’t do that anymore.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•The ruling class know that global warming is real, but have chosen the Thanos solution rather than having to curtail their own excess.
14·4 days agoNo, they always do this. A number of civilizations crashed in the past because the rich wouldn’t adjust to reality.

Technology@lemmy.world•Anthropic Is Building a Predictive Surveillance System to Monitor ActivistsEnglish
581·8 days agoThat was expected. It was the only use for AI right now that might be profitable.
They’re trying that right now with focus on producing things like GPUs, data warehouses and the like paid by circular financing.
Because they have influence over the laws that get written for company ownership, and they’ll make sure it says a human is always needed at the top.

Technology@lemmy.world•Tesla killing Solar Roof is leaving installers with six-figure lossesEnglish
13·10 days agoThere are already others selling solar tiles like Tesla, but a bit of a search tells me these tiles are a minority. Existing houses don’t replace their roof but add panels on top of it. New houses seem to go with cheaper large panels that are prettied up to give a tile like effect and build them integrated into the whole of the roof.

Technology@lemmy.world•I refused to train the AI that could replace meEnglish
19·10 days agoIndustrialization was also inevitable. It also create 100+ years of misery, exploitation and protest. People of course will assume the same will go for AI, but even worse and they assume that because that’s exactly what the creators of AI say will happen. Understandably some folks are a bit reluctant.

Technology@lemmy.world•LG smart TVs caught logging audio with screen off and snooping on local devicesEnglish
181·10 days agoEven then it’s rumoured some brands of TV try to connect to Bluetooth connected devices to connect to the net. I think that was Samsung.
It’s classic circular reasoning.
“He’s so rich because he’s hard working and smart.”
“How do you know he’s so hard working?”
“Because lazy and dumb people don’t get rich, duh.”
To many, rich parents, dumb luck, lack or morals and a huge pile of debt don’t play a role.

They know LLM have serious diminishing returns now, can’t grow much anymore and certainly not get to AGI anytime soon but investors won’t like the message, so if the government sees it as too dangerous and pulls the handbrake right about now that’d be so convenient. Certainly if it also keeps out or limits (Chinese) competitors.
