You could of stopped there. Both are energy drains and I’d even argue gaming has less of a return. But even if someone is just generating images for fun, it’s still fine, just like gaming is just for fun and doesn’t return anything but it’s still fine.
It’s not up to you to pick and choose which technologies are okay based on what the media is saying, but our grid to adapt and upgrade to clean energy (which should have happened a long time ago).
I find enjoyment and use in it, and I’m using less energy than some guy playing GTA or making popcorn. Tbh, the whole anti AI movement kind of comes off as being mostly about acting like dicks and gatekeeping. If you don’t want to use it, then don’t.

I don’t use image gen much, just mockups here and there and the occasional memes. But no one plays only 4 minutes on their ps5. The disconnect is intense. And mind you, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with spending 12 hours gaming on your day off, it’s the constant bitching about AI as if it was the first piece of technology that uses energy.
They are desperate for regulation. In two years, compute will become affordable again and every company will be running their own AI on private infrastructure. They need to find a way to ban open models before then.

All the data isn’t even owned by the artist, you are fighting for universal records, not your local guitarist.
For the climate aspect, it’s mostly grid issues and corruption. It’s laughable to blame AI when we have president pedo prostrating himself in front of oil companies and destroying renewable projects. We need regulations and all that on where they can be placed and how they get powered, but in the end, it’s just software. I could use AI 8 hours a day for my whole life and I still wouldn’t be close to the damage one ticket to Europe does. It’s a scape goat being served by a corrupt pro oil lobby.
Don’t get me wrong, I know what datacenters entail with the amount of people they serve, but if you look at it at an individual level, it’s a drop in the bucket, or it would be if they weren’t using plane turbines. Naw, audio doesn’t take much, definitely not as much as a full time employee. The text models probably don’t need to be very large for this, the whole thing can probably run on a modern phone.
With all the optimization that has been done, everything can be done pretty efficiently except for video and good image gen.
The main issue with all this is probably audio quality (wind + car running + garbage microphones)
I don’t see this working because of car height and arm length differences. I hate the drive thru at banks since I usually have to open the door and half get out of the car if I forget to slide in as close as I can to the thing.
