Funny thing is, I have 2 keyboards and a standalone numpad and one mouse, but one of the keyboards registers itself in the system as keyboard and mouse, because it has mouse moving hotkeys.

So my system literally thinks I have 3 keyboards and 2 mice.

• I use a split ergo keyboard for typing. (this one has the mouse stuff)
• A 65% keyboard for gaming (so I have lots of room for the mouse and don’t have to change the keybindings for the split one)
• A numpad off to the left so it doesn’t block mouse space, need it for some games and spreadsheets.

After a work day is over I shove the split keyboard under the monitor and pull out the gaming one and place the mouse differently.

People that visit always comment on how weird that is, but it works for me.

Not only does borg have strong encryption, it also has git-like incrimental versioning and insanely good compression and de-duplication.

For example, I backup my whole 700GB OS drive (personal data + the whole linux OS install with all my tweaks and configs) - I set it to keep the last 15 “snapshots” (7 daily, 4 weekly, 3 monthly, 1 yearly) and all it takes on the borg server is 800GB.

I like using borgmatic for automatic borg backups, but it’s optional.

When people say that there is very little of something the natural way is “hardly any rain” for example. So if you invert the meaning from “any” to “none”/“no” the whole sentence means the opposite.

I guess it could be explained as follows (but I am no ethymologist, just thinking aloud here, may be wrong):

“hardly any rain” means that there is so little of it, it is hard to even say that there is any rain.

If your friend says to you “There is no rain” and you go outside and it pouring, you could say 'Hardly “no rain!” ’ As a kind of mocking comment highlighting that it’s the complete opposite of no rain. It is very hard to call is “no rain” when it’s raining so much.

I went to school in germany, we had a generic computer class for a semester, where we started with basic controls left, right mouse click, middle click to close apps, tripple click to select a row of text, f2 for rename, f10 create new folder, deleting files, installing and uninstalling software etc.

And even here Linux diverges. Middle click pastes your clipboard and only rarely do apps like pdf viewers support tripple clicking.

Later we learned photoshop, word, excel, powerpoint, internet explorer and how to use the powerful features in google search, like quotes, +, -, site: etc. And I must say, it proved to be extrenely useful. I constantly see people around me struggle with those tasks and I’m thankful for my school teaching me.

I moved all my PCs to Linux ~5 years after graduating and it sure was a long grindy struggle of frustration and accepting bad compromises. I tried using gimp for university assignments and it was a huge PITA. Touched a mac for a week and it was equally full of friction to learn and work with.

What I want to say is - I’m sure the re-learning is a similar struggle in either direction. So if you want to prepare students for the real life, it makes sense to learn the software they will most likely encounter in their real worklife. I’m sure most polish design companies use photoshop and illustrator on windows or mac systems instead of gimp and those school students will have a harder time getting into it.

As long as 90% of businesses use it on their desktop it makes sense to teach. Using windows and the common software (photoshop, excel etc.) on it is basically a life skill at this point in time.

I guess it could be argued the computer proficiency skill is transferable (from Linux at school to Windows at work) as long as there is a significant overlap in the available software, desktop presentation, workflow and control conventions.

One example where it for sure doesn’t work is gimp to photoshop. If you wanna know why, go dig out instructions for how to draw a circle in each one. Or try recreating one of the many effects from PS in GEGL. - The workflow is so fundamentally different that if you know one software, it will actually hinder you learning the other, because your intuition will mislead you and you’ll be constantly frustrated (which actively hinders learning. There are studies on that)

The point I’m trying to make: At some point, you have to trust something which you can not feasibly verify.

For most cases the github repo and an occasional look on a relevant newsfeed is good enough. If it’s not good enough for yours, the first question still stands.

Every time I try to use Ipv6, I run into dozens of weird issues and bugs and my selfhosted stuff becomes unusable/unreliable.

I don’t know where the issue exactly lies in the chain of networking, but it sure is annoying as a motherfucker to debug. As far as I can tell none of my stuff is the problem and the issue lies either with my ISP or VPS provider.

For now, I removed the AAAA entries and suddenly everything works without any hiccups. Wake me up when those issues are solved… maybe in 10 or 20 years…

You write “participate” which sounds like a free choise, but I don’t do it out of my own free will. I do it because the web is so enshittified, that it forces me to selfhost more and more of my own websites that only I use.

I fucking hate doing any devops. I think it’s the most boring, soul sucking task there is. Fucking yamls and .env and config files in different places for every app with it’s own syntax.

I tried passing it to an LLM but it’s always subtly wrong, so in the end I still have to read everything, correct everything, generate keypairs, configure something on each client etc.

Every day a million bots are hammering my services, so I have to run crowdsec and fail2ban and make sure there are no ways in, everything is behind a login, up to date, constant manual migrations to newer versions cause one of my hunders of apps always has a breaking change.

I’ve written more devops and security related stuff on my CV than my carreer programming experience. I got a job because now I am not just a fullstack developer, but a fuller stack devsecops-veloper. Showing my homelab and docker setup during a fucking java + react interview landed an immediate yes at the wage that I wished.

I fucking hate devops. Now I have to do it in my free time and at my job. Why does the world force me into devops? Please take it away. Let somebody else handle it. I want to enjoy my life again.

No not really.

It’s how long it takes to read 32GB from my swap. 170 MB/s continuous read speed ≈ 188 sec (3 min 8 sec) add the normal boot time to it (bios, grub, kernel initramfs) and you get the 4 minutes.

When the system boots cold it doesn’t have to read 32GB, just 0.5-2GB maybe.

For my two systems (pc and laptop)with 32GB RAM each it takes ~4 minutes to boot from hibernation.

Which is expexted afaik.

You can make a keyboard shortcut in the settings that runs a script that simulates f7. From the top of my head

Installydotool:

yay -S ydotool
sudo systemctl enable --now ydotool

Create script~/f7.sh:

Bind it via System Settings → Shortcuts → Custom Shortcuts → New → Script/Application.
