  • It could just be me, but I see no shame at all in declining a duel. Or are we going to go back to when the challenged get to choose the weapon and location? Naked, with whips, to the death would likely make most people trained with a firearm question it. I’m not sure how popular whips are, but I wouldnt consider myself completely inept with them and could probably tag their twig and berries pretty early on in the fight.

  • Man I eventually stopped fighting that hurdle and just changed the login screen to say “Broken-ass auth” so I remember that one is different. I’m the only person using it at my house and recently went back to a car with a CD player and USB port for infotainment (such a refreshing change after a decade and a half of screens in my face) so I haven’t bothered to go back to fix it.

  • I had to RTO to an empty building, after a year and a half or two, two more people moved into the building. All I can think is ‘why must I sit in traffic for an hour everyday to be 80 miles away from my coworkers?’… Then the mortgage comes due and I remember why I deal with the traffic and remember how nice it is not really being contactable after hours (computer stays in the office). I gave way too many free hours away just because I was already in the home office while I ate breakfast or hung out during lunch just because.

  • I suppose it was. The method is drive down dirt roads until you think you see a roof poking through the brush. Take the address to the courthouse and look up who owns the land, then call. We lived there for free, granted it was an old drafty house and was missing window panes here and there. Those we filled with cardboard or plywood (cut to fit the hole), and tapped into place. Our bathroom didn’t have a door, sink (it had a sink, but it was never hooked up), or floor leading up to it (just step joist to joist and don’t rush or you could fall into the dirt/mud under that end of the house).

I’m in my 40s now and just in the past decade or so did I realize how bad it looked from the outside looking in, but to a kid, that was just life. I thought everyone had multiple refrigerators because when one quits working, you just go to the auction and get another to put beside it, as kids we thought it was funny to tell guests to open the other one because it got insanely gross after a while (maggots, black slime that food eventually turned into, etc.).
