Whilst FreeCAD certainly doesn’t have feature parity with things like Creo, I firmly believe it is good enough for most people. I switched to only using that for all my contract work and personal projects and it’s generally been fine

Yeah I think it’s a good looking car but it’s clearly not a Ferrari.

Unless you have a specific use case in mind, or have a particular distribution that interests you, I can wholeheartedly recommend Fedora (GNOME or KDE version, either is good). I’ve not had any issues with it for a few years (I think I had some trouble with it in 2022, but nothing since then).

It’s a pretty common way to refer to them in the embedded space

There’s a forum, which is fine, but the people on there are very insistent that you should do things “the nix way” and if you don’t go all in on that then you get chastised.
