Give more money to make people in favor of data centres? I feel like they already spend an arm and a leg on misinformation campaigns. I’d love to see them spend on the greater good, but I’d rather them spend nothing than invest in the greater detriment.

Yeah I agree that it’s a hard thing, even when it is ultimately the best thing for society. I think in our minds, we are always our best selves with the same capabilities as we have already had. It’s hard to accept if your reflex time is no longer adequate or if you aren’t as strong as you were before…even worse to accept it when dementia is involved.

I hope I’ll be able to set my life up to allow me to give up my drivers licence when the time comes, but I totally get why it is such a struggle for some. It’s going to involve moving to a more walkable area for me, and that’s got a big price tag that many can’t afford.

The current investors are hoping to be rich enough to have their own compound by the time the climate catastrophe gets that bad. By the time they lose money, it will be fairly meaningless. This is why I’ve always hated measuring climate damage in dollars - we can’t measure real world catastrophe against a societal construct

That’s a bit dehumanizing. Some people go grey early in life and the guy is probably crumpled over because he’s in shock. Someone with long grey hair deserves to be part of society as much as anyone else.

Second, I can sympathize with older people who avoid giving up their licenses. We have built an individualistic society that expects everyone to fend for themselves. It would be difficult to find/pay a driver every time you need something at the store, have a medical appointment, want to get your hair cut, want to take a walk by the water, etc. Even if they had the social network for it, they’d feel like a nuisance. Nobody wants to close the chapter on the independent part of their life, even when it is time.

Don’t buy seeds on Amazon, eBay, Etsy, etc - they are so full of scammers that it is impossible to weed out the legitimate sellers from the fake. And if you get fake ones, you may get invasive species that are harmful to the environment around you.

Most places have some great local sellers. But if you’re buying online I would recommend dedicated places like Canada’s Vesey’s Seeds, West Coast Seeds, or the US’s Prairie Moon

Initially, but the article mentioned they aren’t ruling out real money in future. I think they likely want to get a broad user base first, then start offering the really exciting bets for small amounts of money, eventually leading to larger sums.

It basically is Monopoly money at this point. And if they can keep loaning dollars into existence that only the richest have access too, then the money consolidates among a handful of very rich individuals.

Even if the bubble pops, it’s the retail investors who will get screwed and the rich people will loan themselves more money to buy up the scraps.

I’m not hopeful at all about a bubble popping creating societal turnover. It will just push money into the hands of a few while increasing the sized of the impoverished class.

I don’t think it’s elitism to believe that a scientist understands their field better than an influencer. And I also don’t think this is a new phenomenon - as a society we have been buying remedies from carnival attractions and Hollywood celebrities for centuries.

I went to see the leatherback sea turtles nesting a few years ago. They guide themselves by the light of the full moon and we were explicitly told not to use flash photography, as it disorients the turtles. As I’m sure will not surprise you, as the turtle ladies crawled up onto the beach, about 100 blinding flashes went off right in their faces.

I find it problematic that they are using forward PE as a comparison, because forward PE in and of itself is a guesstimate based on numbers a company puts out to attract investors. Sure, they can be audited, but there is plenty of creative accounting done to improve optics

I mean, I agree that the market left fundamentals behind years ago. But when increasing numbers of transactions are handled by robo-advisors all working on similar parameters and institutional ownership is something like 71% of the DOW, can we expect the same result as in 2000?

Billionaires aren’t going to roll over and go bankrupt - they will manipulate the stock market to make it look like the economy isn’t failing. A crash and government intervention isn’t impossible, but I suspect we are already wallpapering over the mess - note that central banks say “markers of recession” rather than “recession”, because then it can’t possibly be real. They would prefer that the 30% of shares owned by us plebs aren’t panic sold so the problem stays invisible, but if it is, they will buy up the shares at a discount and continue to trade them among themselves with fictional dollars that have been loaned into existence.

It is crazy the fur-to-body ratio on some dogs. My dog looks like a black bear until we wash her, and when she is wet she is a skinny, stringy little thing under there.
