Exactly the position I’m in now… 😬

I chose xpenology because I wanted that HDD expandability (because of HDD prices I wanted to only fill 2 of 4 slots and buy other discs later) that only DSM seemed to offer - and I already had a Synology running so I knew my way around it…

It was running beautifully on my new dxp4800+. I even have an extra SSD for my docker containers. And I didn’t need to buy outdated, but very expensive Synology hardware.

But now I need to update from 7.2 to 7.4 and I’m scared. 😁

I already have a game plan. Just… “Backup everything first” - how do you do this with 20TB of data?

Maybe we can also have an “Idea Gym” - you’ll constantly pay for the idea of using it in the future. You don’t cancel the idea gym membership because you feel bad about losing access to the idea, even though the chances of ever taking up the idea are very slim.

You can configure what services you’d like to run or use a predefined template (e.g. “the dad” with Jellyfin, Nextcloud, Pihole, Homarr and Home Assistant).

You’d still have to understand what you are doing, of course.

Have it running on a HP t630 I got for <20€, as “the wifi stick is no longer detected”.

Also got a Wyse 5070 for about 50€ with 8gb ram. The HP is pulling a little less Watts, so it’s the pihole/unbound server for now

I am tinkering constantly with my home setup, but I am lacking the time to set up everything to my liking.

So I am using neither Plex or Jellyfin, I am using Kodi and have a Webdav share available for when I am away on holiday. 😬😁

But then I am only sharing with my closest family in my home network. Somehow it seems everyone is providing a streaming service for half the neighborhood and the remote family (or possibly a polycule with the drama associated, IIRC).
