Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you ever reminisce about an old phone you had in the past?
2·26 days agothere’s discord-wap which is a self hosted discord bride that translates discord into wml 1.1 which is readable by wap browsers
i vibecoded a signal-cli bridge but it’s embarassing to say the least and it’s a security nightmare (at least it works)
depending on what kind of phone you use there’s either a csd or gprs connection.
both need a working gateway
a user named bs0dd made a comprehensive guide on how to set up a gateway and even setting up your own dial-up connection for older csd phones.
csd is hard to setup though, in my country (germany) it only works with vodafone sim cards or (as i currently do it) you can connect to a foreign dial-up connection, some of these still exist lol
i would suggest looking into the reddit community /r/vintagemobilephones and especially their discord. the community is very active and currently still working on projects

Technology@lemmy.world•France’s nuclear fleet gives it one of the world’s lowest-carbon electricity gridsEnglish
01·1 month agoi’m just trying to be brief: the amount of space for golfing far exceeds what is currently being used for wind and solar combined. Space is not an issue and not a real concern. Every free roof can handle solar panels, it is essentially unused space and it bothers no one.
Also what’s wrong with using an activist site as a source if their information is factual?
then the heatwave thingy: those “precautions” will happen several times. Rivers are getting so dry that european countries now lifted the sunday-driving ban for trucks because shipping isn’t reliable.
In summers we produce so much electricity that the price per kwh goes negative atp and we actually have to turn off power plants remotely (which is easy to set up, i do this for a living) - if we build enough infrastructure to have overproduction in winters and enough storage we’re set.
idk why people get so defensive and emotional over nuclear if there’s just cleaner and cheaper options on hand

01·1 month agonot this again…
sure nuclear WAS fine, french power plants are getting old, can’t handle oncoming increasing heatwaves and regularly have major accidents. source (german)
in the age of wind and solar and cheap batteries it is not necessary and much cheaper to build renewables.
also: french nuclear energy is only cheap because it gets heavily subsidized. a kwh of renewables is about 7ct, a kwh of nuclear is in reality about 49ct

10·3 months agoi’ll stick to my nokia.
there’s a whole community of people who dedicate time to make even old WAP Phones useable again in 2026 - and that costs like 20€ instead of 499$
i know the pic x) but yes pretty much this!!

Linux@lemmy.ml•Thinking of leaving Manjaro after the AUR supply chain attack – Distrochooser recommends SUSE, what's your take?
12·3 months agoi’m sorry but the ‘compromised aur package’ controversy may be bad BUT the compromised packages were malware anyway. you just need to check what you install on your system. these malware packages are stuff like “adnauseam-firefox-git” (why on earth would you download a firefox plugin via the aur) or had names like “python-cool-32-git”
the biggest security issue were the users themselves who didn’t check the packages

9·4 months ago5d old account, every answer sounds like an LLM and the post itself is just… questionable.
What’s the goal here?
2014!?! time flies 🥲
identification of cancer, development of vaccines, analysis of weather patterns and the ability to insta-translate speech and basically create real life subtitles are just small examples of vast usecases where AI was genuinely successful and a good use of the technology and there’s so much more.
We got to a point where a 50W specialized all-in-one-computing package can handle the workload of a local llm and outpace my gaming-rig which runs deepseek 8b. 50W is as much as a lightbulb in the 90’s. So the environmental impact goes away with time as technology progresses.
the issue lies with the corpos, not the technology.
Sure, collectively we could stop it. But those who oppose it are not numerous enough.

what i heard was that ai companies now push for regulation to legitimize themselves in front of the law. that saves ai companies from the state being like “yea the party’s up we stop this and crack down on it”
same happened to bitcoin.
but idk shit :)
