In general, there is an entirely separate rule of law for businesses. That’s why regulations were created. Instead of holding a corporations decision makers and investors criminally liable with existing laws like fraud (“false advertising”, etc), or manslaughter (poisoning and killing their workers, customers, or environment), they created an entirely separate rule of law mostly based on laughable punitive damages with limits that don’t significantly impact investors. The entire system is geared to suppress, oppress, and exploit workers for profit.

Agreed… this made me think about stereotypes like “women are attracted to bad boys” and “nice guys finish last” largely stemming from ambiguity about consent.

“Bad boys” refers to behaviors that appear less empathetic, and care less about consent; as in guys that are more reckless and take more risks. Biologically, success in mating is mostly a numbers game, regardless of species, and without taking a chance and trying, the only way you’l ever succeed is through luck. It’s easier to take a risk if you don’t care about consent or the feelings of others.

“Nice guys” refers to behaviors associated with empathy and caring about consent, but sociopathic people also display due to anxiety, cowardice, or attempted coercion/manipulation etc.

The truth is most if us wouldn’t dare do anything remotely inappropriate based solely upon the assumption that hints were dropped.

This can’t be overstated. If a person is caring and empathetic, they are far less likely to take the risk of making the people they care about, or are attracted to, feel uncomfortable, objectified, etc. The threshold in taking a risk will be much higher. Don’t make the mistake of assuming that empathy and care = ability to read “hints”, navigate social situations, or possesses emotional maturity either.

Yeah, when corporate and lobbyist lawyers are passing around a doc, obviously the easiest method is to simply insert their own provisions. They’re not paid to understand, rephrase and simplify the text. They’re paid to make it as complex and obtuse as possible.

Just like there is no crying in the casino, there is no logic or empathy in the mental illness epidemic of fascism.

This is not a problem exclusive to big tech. Absolute power corrupts, absolutely. The oligarchs who own energy and military companies have been committing crimes against humanity the entire time. The vast majority of billion dollar corporations display criminally sociopathic/psychopathic behaviors to both consumers and workers.

Extreme wealth inequality should not exist. Billionaires should not exist. No kings. No oligarchs. No plutocrats. No parasites. Nobody too big to fail. Nobody above the law.

No. They need life in prison. Hundreds of them.

Remember that story where the good guys committed extortion and fraud to succeed? Yeah, me neither…

We’re already letting them bro. The great filter is us. I’ll be surprised if we make it to 2050. The entire industrial revolution is an unplanned terraform, and our response to the potential destruction of a stable climate, and most macroscopic life on Earth, is to double down, consume product, elect pedophiles, worship the most morally bankrupt psychopaths and sociopaths in politics, business, and entertainment; not to mention the widespread contempt and lack of empathy for “others” not like me, for some flagrantly dissonant reason.

We are in the midst of a global mental illness epidemic, and the average talking chimp is sleepwalking through it; barely cognizant of what is even happening outside their personalized propaganda bubble.

I occasionally think about American intelligence agencies, and how they have employed SEVERAL HUNDRED THOUSAND people over the last ~80 years of well documented war crimes and crimes against humanity.

In all that time, the total number of whistleblowers who have exposed those crimes is in the double digits… The number of “heroes” who genuinely possess enough empathy and moral character to stand up to goliath, and sacrifice their lives to defend the innocent, is something like 0.0001% of the population.

This isn’t just proven with intelligence agencies. It’s proven throughout the history of war. Over 500k troops were deployed to Vietnam, and literally tens of thousands of them engaged in war crimes like the rape, torture, or murder of civilians; no more than a few hundred of them actually put their lives on the line to stop the crimes when they had the chance; time and time again, more often than not, the “free” and “democratic” government supposedly “for the people” persecute those whistleblowers and destroys their lives, because they are criminals protecting fellow criminals. Think about how many millions of Israeli’s have gone through the IDF in that time, and how many of them have publicly opposed the genocide…

Considering the reality of history, the very concept of relying on humans to oppose their leadership and the status quo to do the right thing is genuinely psychotic; just full blown delusion and mental illness relying on a rounding error.

Our systems are nowhere near resilient or capable enough of protecting us from human nature. Most of them aren’t even resilient or capable enough to defend us from the most unlikable, incompetent, sociopathic, moronic, criminals imaginable; if they are wealthy they are likely to succeed.

Someone’s gotta finish the job and ensure those pesky glaciers are destroyed… ONCE AND FOR ALL.

Like Canada, they’ll probably virtue signal sovereignty but continue the backend business deals with fascism, and continue courting the political financing of the fascist elite.

Capitalism is the most efficient system… at enabling psychopaths and pedophiles to impoverish and enslave humanity, and destroy the planet.

It’s more likely that the government is compromised by other for-profit interests, and most shit legislation is intentionally hamstrung or loop holed.

Statistical models are not technically algorithms; they are a heuristic which “approximates” a solution probabilistically. They use algorithms to function and operate on data (like everything a computer does) but they are not algorithms themselves.

The main thing they have to do is clearly define that results derived by statistical modeling are opt-in, set limits on what personal data can be used to present content, and ensure there are significant penalties for crippling the experience of everyone who hasn’t opted-in, which all are guaranteed to do to force users to opt-in.

They should define a bare minimum baseline of data points that should be made available to users to control the content they want to see using non-statistical algorithms (e.g. time, location, content type or popularity, friends/subs/followed only or ones they recommend themselves, etc). They should also define that opt-in/out (enabling and disabling statistical model results) should be a part of the main filter UI that uses the aforementioned data points; a simple toggle at the top of their page/feed, permanently visible and near-instantly applicable; otherwise they’re guaranteed to hide it away and make opt-in/out a major friction point.

Basically you need to treat them like they’re sociopathic criminals who will never act in good faith voluntarily, because all multinationals and large corporations are lead by criminally corrupt sociopaths.

The cause is capitalism. Every company is driven by an insatiable profit motive to endlessly grow, and extract as much value from consumers and employees as possible, like a cancer.
