My misleado-sense is tingling with this article. For one, they don’t compare YoY, they just show the 15% price hike and scream “Panic! Buy now!”. Also some of those msrp’s are ridiculous. ( i.e. 430$ for a 5060ti 16gb? Not sure about the US but in europe it never really went below 500€ )

Plenty. I don’t imagine ads cover the huge cost of hosting video in this day and age, especially with all the adblockers running around ( saw an ad revenue number in a study a while ago, google supposedly makes between 100s-10000s dollars per person, depending on their “value” ).

I for one am grateful to all the paying subscribers - it means google will more readily tolerate my shiny freeloading adblocking ass.

Afaik this a fairly standard software licensing model. Pretty much all paid videogames are like that, physical or not. Sony just started to act on it in the hopes of making even more moneyz

Tom’s hardware are corporate shills and I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re overselling a bad situation so that others (intel etc) can also raise prices and have a piece of the pie. Why should only ram manufacturers be the only ones to make a killing.

I agree that hardware-wise it’s a few years late to the party, but I suspect it will find it’s niche. If valve manage to sell out a recently overpriced deck and seriously underestimate the demand for an overpriced controller, who’s to say this won’t at least pay its bills? Besides, it’s an interesting device, it’s customizable and mildly upgradeable, and it has a draw to it. After initially seeing news of it I remember instantly thinking “gotta buy one, even at 500-700€” and only later thinking “wtf kind of use do I have for it”. Anyway, time will tell.
