Can anyone explain to me what the major differences are between MIT and GPL?

I sincerely thank you for your honest and nuanced take, but I don’t fully agree on one thing - Even in this thread you can see people arguing that giving money to (or “having dinner with”) makes you equal to a nazi.

That is the part I object to, because by becoming so extremely polarising, it robs the word of all meaning. I might be too moderate for lemmy (I assure you I have voted leftwing parties for most of my adult life), but to me when I see someone described as a “literal nazi” nowadays I can’t help but wonder “internet nazi or actual nazi”?

So when I object to things like this, it’s because I fear for the damage this actually does to proper discourse, to fighting actual nazis. I don’t give a shit about Omarchy myself (I prefer debian based distros :p), but when someone describes it as “a distro for fascists”, you’re just alienating those users - 99% of whom are probably not even aware of the politically charged reasons behind it. It just feels like virtue signaling to me, and meanwhile only furthering the divide between people.

Again, I think it’s good people call 1password and the others out. But do so on the right basis, like: “What you’re doing is amplifying hate speech”, rather than “you are nazis”.

My issue was with the recursive definition of “nazi” - you are one if you associate with one or if you associate with someone who associate with one. That would mean petty much everyone alive, excluding some uncontacted tribes.

Agree to disagree. To me that meme format literally is someone asking “why is everybody talking about X”. It got some actual in depth answers “this is what it is, this is why people are upset” and then it got deleted.

So now we’re back at the point where there’s less info about what it actually is, only that it’s bad.

Before moving the goal posts, let’s stick with the original premise of the people at the table.

So if that first person left, and someone else joins that table, is that person then also a nazi? Because by that logic, yeah - everyone is a nazi, you included.

I feel this is more about people signaling they dislike he who should not be named (other than initials) than, you know, what is actually wrong with the product.

The same thing happened with the technology communities and Trump / Musk. I sincerely do not care about these people or their opinions. I’m here for the tech news, not a circlejerk about whom the Internet considers a nazi. I guess I will just have to add a few more keywords to filter now.

I mean, in that case -you’d definitely be right, and I would be the first to admit I stand corrected. But as someone whose grandfather has been killed by actual nazis, I do find it in poor taste how easily people reach for that comparison.

I do agree with you on thing though - things are getting worse. But at least we will have you to lead the way, give us a hint what to prepare for, and to remind us that things could always be worse.

My bad, I went for the pentagon, since that was what the linked article was about. I always thought this was just a thing gun lovers said to themselves to justify keeping their murder weapons. I didn’t know things were actually so bad that, contrary to most of the rest of the civilised world, you really do need them to protect yourself from the government.
