Hey Ed, what’s the point of fuck you money if you never say fuck you?

I have a friend who works for Google, in a non-computer science department but one that does require some amount of decent computer hardware (compute, IO, etc.) They go through this cycle every year or so; their team uses MacBook Pros because it fits their needs the best -> department heads above them see this and take the MacBook Pros away and replace them with Chromebooks -> team cannot accomplish their goals on the Chromebooks, so they lobby up the chain and eventually get their MBPs back -> … ad infinitum.
I carry a phone and small tablet for most things. Having them combined would be pretty cool. Although I have been bearish on foldables since the beginning.
Apple commentator John Gruber wrote this regarding Samsung vs Apple’s foldable:
Samsung Galaxy Fold8 — the new one that preemptively copied the folding iPhone’s aspect ratio
Emphasis mine. Who knows, maybe Samsung had some inside information about the iPhone Duo when designing the Fold8, or maybe they just decided on the aspect ration organically. I’m more Apple fanboy than hater, but even I had to take a double take when I read that blatantly Apple-centric sentence.
Edit: I’m just now coming to the realization that because Samsung makes the screens for the iPhone, maybe it is accurate to say they preemptively copied the Duo.

201·21 days agoNah, I don’t think that’s it. Cook is 65, and retirement (or semi-retirement) is appropriate for his age.
Termus is a hardware guy, and if AI is going to play a part in Apple’s long-term plan (and I agree that it will,) it’s going to skew heavily on-device. I don’t think we see any big AI changes from Apple just because Ternus is now CEO.

Technology@lemmy.world•Apple One and Apple TV subscription prices increase by up to 20 percentEnglish
33·26 days agoAgreed, it has been somewhat underpriced. But I also generally prefer my plex setup, and have only had Apple One for classical music, Friday night MLB games, and F1.
Strongly considered and almost cancelled Apple One this morning, but figured I’d hang on until the end of baseball and formula 1 seasons. This price jump changed my mind, and now cancelled.
Progressive. And I’ve now set aside enough money to finally switch to pay in full on my next policy.
I say this with all respect; can we not use Gemini or other AI agents as “evidence.” I see your other post, and I’m not disputing your point. My own policy offers a $20 discount when paying in full (on top of avoiding monthly per-payment fees, which are $4 per payment.)
I’ve personally never seen in my own policies any kind of financing when paying monthly. It’s always been policy total / 6 = monthly payment. Then there is a modest (and yes, mildly infuriating) fee per payment. When I said the fee was the cost of financing, I didn’t mean it literally was that, but more of an “effective” cost of financing. I’d love to see someone’s policy that has a financing increase line item.

21·27 days agoThat is indeed mildly infuriating. Do you get the discount AND avoid fees if you auto-pay in full?

Yes, but contrast that with replacing three tires with usable life left in them.
I’ve read that you can often buy a single replacement and they’ll “shave” it down to match the tread of the existing tires.
Well then, I take it as a compliment.
What does that mean?
If you think his tax cut in any way will be a good thing, I have a bridge to sell you.

Technology@lemmy.world•‘We are screwed’: People near data centers dread heat wave pollution.English
2·3 months agoI think you may be underestimating the size of cities. Even San Francisco, famously small for a major city, is 15 times (at approx. 30k acres) the size of the physically largest data center in the US (Switch Reno Tahoe) at 2,000 acres. That’s still just 1/7th the size of Manhattan.
I won’t argue that 2,000 acres isn’t huge for a data center, but just trying to put numbers to the argument.

The people claiming it’s humanity ending are all directly involved in the AI companies. One take is that they are the ones that know the most about it.
My take is they are financially incentivized in making sure their investments grow in value.
