They probably don’t mean the bride itself. the “Golden Gate” part refers to the waterway underneath the brigde, which used to be a very important entry/exit point for boats back before the bridge was built.

Because the are the bridge covers is called the Golden Gate (since it is the only way for ships to get to the Golden State) therefore the bridge going over it is the Golden Gate Bridge
