My complaint is that the argument from OP is bad.

The argument, without ambiguity, is essentially that because the developer is morally tainted you should not use the software. That just doesn’t follow, and the argument itself distracts from taints any real concerns about the product itself.

Actual useful info, very cool. How interesting it might have been if this were the subject of the post, but sadly it seems like this is secondary to arguments about personality.

Not precisely what I was going for, but also a wrong and self-soothing argument.

What I meant was that people who whine and make everything about politics and the moral purity of people who aren’t doing political work are generally considered insufferable assholes. And a fair number of people will do things just to because rhe person who said they shouldn’t is an asshole.

I mean, I do think he approaches fascist ideology with his blog posts, and he seems to also be a credulous rube when it comes to AI, but I will admit that in his blog post he argues for deportation, not killing. (Deporting to where? Unclear. Roma can come from various EU nations, including Denmark.)

But even given that I don’t like the guy, I have to ask, does he harm libre software, and does using his libre software harm other people the way his preferred immigration policies would? To me the answers seem to be no on both counts. Will I be suspicious of his work? Maybe, but suspicion isn’t prejudgment. Will I financially support him in any way? Hell no, he can spend that Dell money on his own. But the beauty of free software is that it is free, and you are not bound by the politics of its creator.

I’m sure that’s your sincere opinion, but even if it’s not, at least it’s coherent.

It is really funny that I have no idea what security issues there are with the software, because everybody seems to be concerned with anything but.

Of all the bad things people might complain about fascists doing, FLOSS software development isn’t one of them.

I… what? This literally says nothing. The title promised me a description of a power grab, but the actual contents are just “DHH sux”. Even accepting that premise as I do…no power grab is described.

The only issue anyone seems to be taking with the main line project is the dev. Half of his design choices are completely uncontroversial on the other half would never generate this much fucking heat.

It’s almost like you have to judge software based on its utility rather than the political wisdom of the developer.

And businesses grow with exposure. And celebrity grows with attention.

While I find DHH’s views odious, I have to recognize that they are not that unusual nor obviously baked into his software project. There is no particular benefit to howling about the free Linux distribution that he’s developing on the grounds that he has bad politics.

Unless you can tie the development of the operating system to the explicit promotion of those odious views or the creation of actual material harm then you are just generating noise that at best informs the highly unpopular minority of people who give a shit about the political perspectives of the person who delivers their fucking milk, and at worst serves as a positive advertisement for the project because it’s upsetting people that everybody doesn’t like anyway.

Positive polarization: a lot of rich people are donating a lot of money to it, maybe (probably?) because the creator is well-connected and the OS makes lots of references to AI. Negative polarization: The creator has bad opinions, and the OS is very AI-forward.

The nix package(?) system, sure, but the eponymous OS of course has parts under a diversity of licenses, including a GPL kernel.

What I don’t get/trust if how Omarchy just slaps an MIT label on its GitHub even when I can see software in there that I know use different licenses.

Most of the people going on about him take a lot of umbrage with his racist ideology, but all he seems to do with it is blog. If there are more material concerns (like with Proton) then I’m not seeing them be raised.
