  • Thread about LG TVs conducting mass-surveillance on consumers just because they can: computers are dirt-cheap and consumers foot the bill: they pay for the malicious- & spyware-infested computers and they pay for the data connections that allow those malicious computers to exfiltrate data back.

    User concerned about mass-surveillance.

Your post: that’s completely and technically impossible. I just highlighted how mass-surveillance of a national-population’s location is now child’s play because it’s fundamentally ‘metadata’ that’s generated by the network: it’s how computers work. The difficult part is computing on these large databases, something that technology companies have made great progress in.

Nearly everyone literally carries around an internet-enabled microphone in their pocket; surveillance-capitalists are trying to hot-mic and hot-video(?) consumers 24/7: see Apple’s watch and Facebook’s spyware glasses as the latest attempts to make that behavior socially acceptable. They rapaciously want more data. “They” isn’t a nebulous, unidentifiable term: it’s right here in this thread: LG, Facebook, Google, the FBI, the NSA and whoever else is trying to make a profit out of mass-surveillance. The computers are there collecting data maliciously (as it’s done secretly) and users’ data-connection’s are abused to transmit what is collected.

You continue to ignore all the leaks and literature about America’s intelligence agencies and their global mass-surveillance programs. What even is your rebuttal to Edward Snowden’s leaks?

I guess you’re ignoring the public-news about A.I. companies ‘partnering’ with America’s Department of War and hand waving everything away with a gotcha: oh you’re just talking about a nebulous They™. You’re a contrarian dipshit.

We kill people based on metadata.

    —Michael Hayden

The American Government blaming the killing of children on outdated data and computers.

Here’s an article that highlights the duplicitous nature of surveillance-capitalism and its brazenness: Pokemon Go users collected data that will be used to kill people. It was not consensual and it was done in secret.

  • Umm… You’ve seen NSA’s data centers?

“No way every domestic telephone call is being recorded and transcribed!”

    Next moment:

“Woah! Gnarly dude! A.I. that’s been trained on ludicrously large datasets! It can mimic your mom’s voice, dude! Here, check it out! It can also write e-mails like a human!”

All the leaked intel points to: this is a very real and possible situation. Better not think about it and stick your head deeper into the sands.

On a technical level Google knows where 80% of Americans are, because they’re using Google’s Android. It could report back what cell-tower their mobile-computer is using, or it could be using the mobile-computer’s GPS, or it could take the SSID of any nearby WiFi or Bluetooth device and compare it to a map that’s diligently updated daily by every Google Android user. To say Google knows where every Google Android user is is very technically possible. It’s also technically possible to infer other things with a satisfactory probability, like where the other 20% are.

The NSA, CIA and FBI were the data harvesters. The solutions to their needs were financed by them and we got… for instance, Google. They had vasts amounts of data and needed a way to search through it. Likewise the intelligence-agencies wanted ways to impersonate others digitally and… oh look, we have live ‘deep-fakes’. I won’t bother espousing how the economy serves the state’s needs first and any consumer commodities are second- or third-order artifacts, but really? You don’t think the very thing advertisers are doing now–in no way secretly either–are not technically feasible for the rapacious, infinite-money pits of the secret-police?

Right–I forgot! Only communists have secret-police!

Sorry, I’m convinced meta analyses are garbage written by the least capable academics. They create yet another “study” that supports X or Y position without testing anything at all–that outsiders use to further an X or Y agenda. More meta-studies based off other meta-studies! It’s mountains of useless bullshit.

For example, a more recent meta-analysis by Wykes and colleagues (2008) examined controlled trials of CBT for schizophrenia and confirmed findings from previous meta-analyses (e.g., Gould et al., 2001; Rector & Beck, 2001), suggesting that CBT had a small to medium effect size as compared to control conditions on both positive and negative symptoms.

How brain-rotted do you have to be to think this says anything? “We reread the articles and they still say the same thing… because… they’re written.” Maybe we should perform another meta-analysis on the same articles! Third time’s the charm!

The underlying papers are of no use at all:

CBT for depression was more effective than control conditions such as waiting list or no treatment

Like holy shit, really? This is your foundation of evidence that CBT works? Just look at the proponents of CBT–it’s a magical, effective treatment for everything under the sun! I can’t take it seriously, especially when it’s pushed as being as effective as medications.

I had some blood work done and it indicated that I would likely have a negative or poor response to an antidepressant I’d been taking for nearly a year. I’d tell the doctors that it does absolutely nothing, but they kept increasing the dose and insisted it would do something positive. It never did. These are the same disinterested, bullshit doctors that would tell you to engage in CBT.

All the therapists would gaslight you into believing it’s all your fault: just think your way out of it. Fucking bullshit. Absolute puerile bullshit.

The reality is I suffer from something that has a genetic component to it: crippling depression that runs in the maternal family. No. Talk therapy doesn’t do shit. No. CBT doesn’t do shit. Appropriate drugs actually work and I’m now in a so much better place after living my whole life with crippling depression, anxiety and panic attacks. I finally feel able to live a normal life. Do you know how much money and time I’ve wasted on talk-therapists? They’re not doctors. They’re complete time-wasters. They should be banned as I’m convinced they perpetuate harm.

Even proponents of talk-therapy have that fundamental caveat that absolves them of everything: it could take years before you see any results. It’s all con-artists selling snake-oil. Psychology is such a bull shit field.

  • I take personal offense (on Sony’s behalf). How could you possibly frame innovation and progress as anti-consumer behavior? The reality is that the industrial mega-corp is providing the services and products consumers actually want. If they didn’t capitalism would be sure to punish them and they’d die an economical death. Children’s entertainment is funded via their parents and neither child nor parent is choosing to buy physical media. You can’t blame Sony for holding on to stock that no one wants to buy. ‘Gamers’ can have their emotional outburst, but things will continue as normal and they’ll have forgotten about it after nap time.

  • I agree. Disclosure of A.I. use should be mandatory.

My main concern with A.I. use is its ability to hide incompetence. If a new agent introduces code that was entirely written by illegal-software that violates copyright law–A.I.–then that should be made clear, even if competent-programmers review the new inclusion and approve of it. Otherwise people are left with the impression that this new agent is a competent programmer. A.I. use–undisclosed–creates false reputations.

The disclosure being encouraged and not mandatory is purely to protect the egos of programmers currently utilizing A.I. products.

However I do respect their decision and I maintain projects should be self governing.

  • You’re not wrong, but it’s really American-software companies. Google would not allow a non-American business to be listed on Google maps without providing restricted-data that included: a) a video demonstrating how to access the business, b) passwords for logins to the software they used, c) & codes to physical safes that resided at the business’s location. Ostensibly this was to prove that the entity requesting a business addition to Google maps was the proprietor. They refused. I mean, it is the sort of information a thief would want.

I have to state that the above was told to me by the store manager and even I felt it could not be true, but I could not discern a reason why they’d lie about this particular thing whilst I could see why Google would want such information. It would help with credibility: that the individual really did have a link to the business in question, but then if Google used that information to verify it was correct they’re hacking other businesses to do so.

It also has to be mentioned that Google (and any major American-software company) embeds itself into the United State’s surveillance operations and apparatuses.

If anyone has more information about how businesses register on Google maps I’d be interested in reading. I’m specifically interested in foreign businesses outside America, not domestic American listings inside America.

  • I wouldn’t blame fiat at all. It’s an issue of governance, classes and growing poverty. Capital has been shrinking labour’s share, year on year. Your inability to afford a nominal price has nothing to do with fiat. The capitalist class have just grown more brazen and they’ve realised no one will say “no”.

    https://fortune.com/2026/01/13/us-workers-smallest-labor-share-gdp-on-record/

If you want to quip about AI being mentioned in the above article do note that labour’s share of GDP had been on the decline before ‘AI’ was a twinkle in your father’s eye. It’s been a set trend, with politician’s endlessly arguing with the working class: you’ll get your share soon™, but not now. It never came and it never will. The political promises are the same, but they increasingly sound ever hollower.

It’s just more capitalists doing what capitalists do.

Good to have you back in the corpo., kid. Stay blind as we shunt you into a new era of authoritarianism. You’re absolutely right. Freedom is inconsequential compared to framedrops. Framedrops should never happen. Linux is far too buggy to be used. It’s little more than a toy at this stage. Check back in ten years. Until then your trusty Windoz3 eleben with enhancements from Givbidia will distract you! No, don’t look there! Ad!

  • one common runtime

The year is 2XXX. The one common runtime to run them all is within reach… we all just need to use XXXXXXXXXXXX. Scratch that, we’ve just built XXXXXXXXXX. Hang on, scratch that… we’re now all doing something different.

Just a throw away comment, but as a user I do avoid flatpaks. It takes forever to install anything and it’s just absurdly ugly in design. The benefit is… ? I genuinely don’t know.

The people who want software to just run, whilst having no understanding of a computer are actively being herded towards entirely different ecosystems by capital. They’re already patrons of businesses. Capital spends a portion to ensure they stay patrons. No one is paying advertisers to advertise GNU+linux. No one is paying OEMs to ship GNU+linux. No one is lobbying governments to entrench GNU+linux into organisations.

Those that want it to ‘just run’ on a unix derivative are probably a very queer minority.

I am absolutely acrid towards computer users. Look, it’s just like the app store! Just press this button and it will work! That’s all software: press the correct button and it will work. Users don’t give a fuck. Libre software will never entice users like commercial software does because only commercial software can pay for users.

Capitalism & software on a comment about flatpak’s removed design and the common runtime to rule them all. I’m getting lost; what’s new. Does flatpak actually have any momentum? AppImage? I genuinely don’t know.
