I have to disagree. They are better hardware with way worse software support. Pi’s one big selling point is how out of the box friendly they are, meanwhile getting an orange pi flashed and booting Linux is an interesting experience using a Chinese flash writer with no English translation (back when I tried an orange pi 4).

Raspberry pi is public. They have a clear profit motive behind the upsell. Clear as day.

Yes with the asterisk that a decent amount of the off-grid hardware hidden in trees around the country will probably never get a firmware update. Because people have either forgotten about them or can no longer reach them. It’s already a big issue with orphaned nodes running outdated firmware clogging up the default LongFast channels in more densely populated areas.

Its not about the cost of the radio, the hardware for a digital am receiver at this point is pennies… The issue is electric and hybrid drivetrains generate a lot of very strong localized EMI from the motors and motor inverter drives, and AM is inherently bad at rejecting EMI so it usually wipes out most stations unless they are very strong. It gets really expensive trying to reduce or filter that out.

I feel like audio is the one thing that’s just not super useful to them. these are pretty much all dedicated roadside cameras where all you’re gonna hear is car noise.

Now, harvesting every wifi and bluetooth device near your public roadway… that’s a different matter.

So to the surprise of no-one, it can and does take and send photos of pedestrians and faces, just like Flock assured us it doesn’t. Sure the camera itself does not run facial recognition, but those images are still being sent back home which means they ARE processing them.

Also the amount of errors and instability they describe is fucking hilarious. Thse cameras are built like shit.

Packing styrofoam and a hot knife sculpting tool is not super expensive. Glue slabs of styrofoam together until it’s big enough then cut it down. final wrap it with plaster and paint it

Just in the last week I noticed a huge uptick in news articles about crimes being solved “with the help of” Flock systems. They’re trying too little, too late to drive the narrative.
