I’m saying that AI companies have repeatedly shown a flagrant disregard for licenses, contracts, and the law, and have engaged in massive theft. Why should we expect that any contract would actually be honored? The whole thing is a huge fucking grift.

Companies trust other companies all the time, and it’s foundational to most all SLA/SLOs. Any time I’ve voiced concerns around how AI companies are using the data we are giving them (like giving them access to our codebase), it’s brushed off as “we have an agreement with them”. It’s just a load of hogwash. They can and will abuse all data they have access to, just as they have done thus far.
In this particular case, we are talking about a data center, and it is not at all reasonable to assume that the data that flows to said data center is in any way protected, especially one run by Musk.
Still means jack shit. Companies will lie through their teeth and violate any and all they can get away with.
They are not to be trusted.
I write code myself all day, as I have always done. And more and more software engineers are finally starting to see the consequences of relying on LLMs for software development.
Writing code has never been the bottleneck.
I do use quite a bit, but I also do a lot of different things. Compiling code, running docker containers, local web servers, an android emulator, slack, browser tabs for Jira/confluence/figma/etc., all adds up pretty quick.
8GB is definitely nowhere near enough, at least for what I need to do.
I make more money than most people in the US, in the top 6% of earners. $2k/month is still a significant amount of money and not something I could afford to do, at least not without significant sacrifice.
That being said, I have a wife and 2 kids I support, and we have a house. A normal house, not extravagant (slightly more than the median house price in the US, which is very high). But all of that does cost a lot of money, so even though the amount I make sounds like a lot, when you actually pay for everything you need to live a modestly comfortable life, it adds up.
If I didn’t have anyone else to support and was just living in an apartment, I could probably swing $2k/month, but it’s still not insignificant. You could do a lot with that kind of money.
To be honest, someone behaving the way that you describe would make me think that they don’t work for their money, or at least, not all of it. Sounds like someone really affluent that has a lot of family money. Normal people in the US generally can’t afford to do something like that.
That’s without any taxes, though. It’s $4563/month after just federal income tax. Add in other taxes and $2000 is probably easily 50% of the median income.

It doesn’t need nearly as many. AI inference is orders of magnitude more expensive than a single search query (ignoring the fact that Google does it’s own inference with search queries now). And that doesn’t even include training, which is stupidly expensive to do.
Except unlike smartphones that are so ubiquitous and essential for life today, using chatbots is entirely elective and unnecessary.
Meat is an important source of essential nutrition and eschewing it is a luxury to many people in the world. Online shopping, in this day and age, is very frequently the only way to acquire certain goods we need. It is practically impossible to stay informed as to the state of the world without reading news from corporate sources.
There is nothing essential or unavoidable about ChatGPT. On the contrary, they and their audience would be much better served by not using it.
That’s not lying. There’s nothing linguistic about numerical computation.
The switch was pointless and broke a lot of scripts. It was just dumb, through and through.

But yeah, it’s really depressing. People that used to be thinking about new ideas, tools, libraries, or methodologies now spend all of their time fiddling with prompts. It just sucks all of the air out of the room. People generate so much shit now that has no business existing, because there’s no friction in doing so. We fundamentally need to struggle with systems in order to understand them enough to make something better. Writing code was never the bottleneck, comprehension was. And struggling to understand is how one acquired comprehension. Now, things are so much worse. Not only are people not spending the necessary time to comprehend systems, but they are producing code at a rate far greater than anyone can comprehend. It’s an ever-increasing mountain of comprehension debt, and it’s poisoned the entire ecosystem. That’s what people just don’t get.
