  • Ads suck hard, but avoiding them was just one of the plethora of advantages of early streaming. Early Netflix had what felt like infinite content, on demand, for a fraction of the price of cable. That’s why the majority of cord cutters ditched cable; price. Avoiding ads was definitely a factor but it was hardly the main one for most of us.

The modern streaming industry has embraced ads in a way that feels somehow grimier than cable because the ads are targeted and we all know it’s greed that’s put them there.

  • I am on nextdoor and at least once a week there’s a post about Seattle’s mayor turning off the flock cameras and it’s inevitably flooded by Republicans screaming and shouting that she wants there to be more murder. These people have no critical thinking skills and just parrot anything whatever media station they chose says.

They always disappear when I point out the cameras have been hacked, Leo’s nationwide can access, they’ve been caught stalking with the cameras, they can listen in on conversations through a cracked window, and we have no guarantees the data won’t be fed to AI. Guess I can add precise location tracking through phones to the list too.

As a salaried desk employee, yes. I have no need to rush unless I have a meeting to get back to, sometimes I have no tasks remaining after lunch so I could easily take a second hour. For me it’s not about being efficient at lunch, it’s about clearing my mind so I can remain productive (if needed).

  • The issue is really the use cases for AI have been way overblown. The AI companies sold it as an employee replacer. “It’ll cost pennies on the dollar, have better accuracy, and doesn’t need time off!” That’s not actually what it is though. Companies are coming to terms with AI being more expensive, less accurate, and dumb.

A piece of software I use at work is a great example and they barely oversold the capabilities. The software has a built in AI assistant which is pretty good at pointing you in the right direction to get the result you want. Then some genius realized it could also pull report data, so they removed some metric options from the reports and now I have to spend significantly longer prompting the AI to pull the metrics I want in a usable format. This is also far more computing power. So they decided to let you link other AI agents to their software so you could use another bigger model for “better results” (they don’t want to pay for all that AI themselves). Nobody bit, nobody linked to another AI because nobody wants to pay more. They’re quietly adding those metrics back to the reports now.
