My hypothesis is that the rise in distracted driving was just as bad in European countries but they have safer infrastructure that limits cars’ speed and otherwise protects pedestrians, and I think that could be tested by looking at the rates of car crashes overall in Europe (if those went up at the same time as the US without a corresponding rise in dead pedestrians I think that’d suggest their infrastructure is the difference)

This doesn’t read like AI to me, it actually does connect its thoughts together and builds an argument narrative

That said, it is really awful human writing that has some cringey phrasing choices and the kind of grammar/sentence structuring I’d expect from a text to speech derived unedited stream of consciousness, I’m just not getting AI vibes off of it

Instead of blocking them I wonder if archiving their posts and reposting their questions with the archived comment section would be better. I’m personally less interested in punishing an individual user who’s using this space selfishly (as much as they might deserve it) than I am in making this space more useful for everyone, and I don’t know how either of these proposals would do that in the short term (arguably they might in the long term by changing user behavior, but that seems like it really would take a long while).

A kid in my elementary school got yelled at because her stomach gurgled too loudly for the teacher and it wasn’t til years later that I was like “She lived in a trailer park, she probably didn’t have food at home” and realized how fucked up that was (to be totally fair, the teacher was kinda joking and had a reputation as the asshole teacher he really leaned into, so he yelled at kids for stupid shit all the time, but still)
