Thing is, they launched with a lot of hype and investor money. The criticism is an entirely valid reaction to counter DHH’s narrative around the (lazy spin off an existing) OS.

I didn’t intend to make a speech, apologies! Most of the time on here I’m just typing my stream of consciousness out 😄

I can defo follow the complications of theming part, yeah. But I’m also a Basic Betty in that I’m fine with a bare bones dark mode. OpenBox mostly gets out of my way and lets me just work without being annoyed with the window appearance.

Same with Conky — I don’t do anything fancy with it, it’s a few plains system Info’s, set it and forget it. So it’s really only when I change hardware I need to muck about with the .rc.

KDE… I fiddled endlessly with themes and widgets, etc. to get it just so. Then I’d get annoyed that some little detail wasn’t immediately customisable to my liking and spend hours finding alternatives and workarounds 😆

I think minimalism is really better for my personal wellbeing. But I’m always curious how others choose and customise their workspace 👍

Glad to hear you like the change from OpenBox to KDE. I made the opposite switch some 10 years ago, and don’t really see a reason to return. What made you go back to a DE, asking out of FOMO curiosity?

If you’re not christian, you’re not following the commandments, because they’re 40% contractual obligation to worship the christian god exclusively.

But then, all of the Old Testament is really Jewish with some minor edits to retrofit it for the sequel. Guess somebody coveted their neighbour’s scripture and broke its fundamental rules to swipe it.

Except the first four is all about how you must follow and obey the Xian god. It’s the last six that are fairly practical, almost to the point of common sense.

FWIW, I use the OpenBox install of Endeavour OS, with a few simple tweaks of my own. As far as I know OpenBox isn’t actively maintained, but it Just Works™.

I’m on EndeavourOS, too. I don’t see anything near that kind of memory drain, but I’ve been using window managers instead of desktop environments for a long time.

For ages I had old, poorly specced laptops, and the big DEs like KDE would quickly cap what memory I had for actual software. And I’m not even a gamer, this would be GIMP or a plain browser that would crash because of too little RAM.

Even now, with more memory and better CPU, I stuck to the habit of using a WM instead, and everything really just runs better. You do sacrifice some eye candy and built-in functions, but IMHO it’s worth the tradeoff.

Not as much as people clutch their pearls over a five pointed Fediverse logo…

You said you wanted a community to post vibe coded projects, go ahead and set it up. I don’t see why it needs to be foisted onto c/self hosted, unless you have some vested interest in boosting sloppy mcslopface projects.

I installed another but similar Brother model on Arch recently, so not exactly what you’re asking. But it took 5-10 minutes between finding drivers and printing a test page. I doubt it will be much different in Mint 👍

The better alternative would be if all sites just had RSS feeds… but yeah, since we can’t have nice things, this is the way to keep tabs on site updates!
