Bailing out the ai industry makes no sense. At least banking, it’s about stability of the financial system. The reason a crash is coming is that ai cannot be wedged into every little place, like they hoped. So it’s not too integrated to fail. If it fails, there will be financial fall out. Bailing out the industry won’t fix their problems with profitability. Nor will it be advantageous for the country or the people.

The only reason they would, is due to industry pressure, investor pressure, or corruption. A bail out would send a market signal that undermines the free market. Ideas and businesses are meant to fail if they are not sustainable. So, it would offer no short term gains for the majority and long term damage for the investor class.

I used to be less worried about the rug pull as so much money was from private equity and from companies. However, with the launch of SpaceX and soon OpenAI and anthropic, as well as those companies being shoehorned into index finds, they are trying to transfer the bag. Let’s hope it pops before that happens.

That’s a problem that precedes llms. There used to be information online but it was normally informed. Since the social web, blogs, reviews, business reviews, Google reviews etc etc are packed so full of junk and nonsense that they are unhelpful.

The hope of the internet was to make information available to all. Spread ideas. Instead we as a species spread vapid half thoughts that drowns out the useful. LLMs are an extension of that and likely will make it much worse. But they can also be used to filter it.

The question is who decides which data is accurate and how do we verify that with these black boxes that are poorly understood by most of us.

Curating your own interests involves some aapect of information seeking. Llms can be used for that. It’s not a case that anyone should trust ai to make a decision. It’s that ai can help surface information to allow them to make a decision. The problem is too many people are letting the ai make a decision for them, or using it instead of other information that is better.

Unless there are community based information sources. Adblock works mainly by blacklisting. Foss agents could use a combination of blacklisting and whitelisting in the same way. Yes, it takes effort, but spread over a community, it’s minimal. In the days before internet, it meant buying a magazine or newspaper. There has always been a certain amount of effort to find reviews, other than word of mouth, which will continue.

With big data processing being more available, things like price checking and review checking can be automated. The problem is its always cat and mouse. Browser extensions started by finding you discount codes and automatically entering them. Then they started to mine your data and swap referral codes to theirs as they enshittified.

LLM’s are here to stay nut they are not groundbreaking in the way businesses hope, replacing workers. They are useful in replacing tasks. They are just not consistently good at those tasks. They shift the cognitive effort in many cases. Well, we should use them to shift the effort back onto corporations.

I hope my ai agent can learn what I like and give me suitable recommendations based on that.

Part if why ai is so overvalued is companies don’t value my time. Slop won’t fix that. I’m hooeful that ai agents allow us to filter out the junk we don’t want. No more waiting on hold. No made searching online for deals and product reviews. Just agents parsing data that we want.

For entertainment, there was a shift when we moved from broadcast to digital as we could binge and not miss episodes. The rise of reality TV muddied the waters of quality and was the equivalent of ai slop. However those that preferred, avoided it.

Of course that won’t be automatic. We’re going to need open models, open training data and a great FOSS ecosystem around personal agents. We also need to make sure that the means of compute don’t fall out of people’s hands.

The best thing about open source is that a huge new entrant into the system only adds to the system. China will undoubtedly make changes but others can choose to implement or not. Some may be good for all. Some may suit Chinese users only. Some may suit government only. Some may suit Chinese government only. Whatever, it’s options and novel methods.

And the more that do this globally, the more independence and options we all have.

I think the users that use ai as a crutch are lijely the ones that get told to google it, not tge ones saying it. Iys those that dont want to learn that use ai and dont research. Googling something requires (required?) a curiousity. A chatbot just presents factual seeming data to those who font question it.
