Okay I will ☺️🌈🌞 (picture of me living in an awesome world where people’s opinions on video games can’t be wrong)

You can’t really be “wrong” about an opinion on a video game
I used to be a “silent phone” person until I discovered scheduled do-not-disturb. I like being able to hear when someone is calling me, I just don’t want to hear it at certain times/days.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why is the US currently obsessed with protein?
1·20 days agoI’m not sure which of us misunderstood it, but my interpretation of their findings is that overall, increased protein intake was not associated with increased athletic performance. However if you look ONLY at endurance, it was actually associated with high performance, though only when alongside carbs. Maybe counterintuitive.
Their total sample size was around 300 or 400 iirc. Pretty big, but could be better.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why is the US currently obsessed with protein?
62·21 days agoHaha I watched this a couple weeks ago.
Another really important point they make is that even among athletes, extra protein intake does not really help. Athletes only have higher protein intake because their overall caloric intake is higher. Studies show that increased protein intake is only associated with higher athletic performance when it is alongside increased intake of other nutrients (carbs). I was looking at a meta analysis a few days ago. I don’t have the link but I took this screenshot.
So a “protein shake” is not likely to help you unless you were already protein deficient, which as somebody else pointed out in this thread, is not likely for Americans who over consume meat.
Disclaimer: I am not an expert.

What does Lemmy think of the theory that The Wizard of Oz was written as an allegory for the gold/silver currency standard and that “Oz” is named after the abbreviation for “ounce”?

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you ever reminisce about an old phone you had in the past?
3·26 days agoI do miss my Pixel 5a. I think it was the last Pixel to have a headphone port. I have an 8a now and it’s just worse. Effective battery life is MUCH worse and I’m not even sure why. The device itself is a little thicker, no headphone port, the under-screen fingerprint reader is much less effective, the pinhole camera is in a worse location, and other than that it’s pretty much the same.
I would have used my 5a into perpetuity but the screen spontaneously broke one day totally out of nowhere. Didn’t drop it or anything, it just permanently froze while I was using it one time.
Turns out it might have been some moisture problem and people online said that it might work if you put the phone in the freezer. Well, that actually did work and I used it that way for a couple weeks. I would keep my phone in the freezer overnight and it would work for most of the day. But eventually that stopped working and the screen warranty had just ended so I got a new (worse 😡) phone. But I miss the 5a…

Learning Japanese was my covid hobby. It’s a very fun language!
To be fair, that’s the standard pronunciation in a very popular dialect of the language.
Obviously I don’t agree with anybody on 100% of all things, but if I had to throw out some of who I sarcastically call my personal philosopher kings:
- Cordelia Fine
- Philip N. Cohen
- Ella Yurman, YouTube
- Noam Chomsky
- Big Joel, YouTube
I’m so certain that this Rhythm Heaven level is based on this song & album art. The color palette/style is the same, and the music is really similar too.

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•Local news did an entire segment featuring a guy who's mad about having to drive more carefullyEnglish

Okay, so I guess that one guy being angry is the opposite of safety.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What cities have bad vibes or just feel "off"?
3·4 months agoI’ve been through Amarillo, TX and it was kinda surreal. The ONLY two kinds of business in the city are steak houses and gas stations. It felt like a movie set.
Could be for a variety of reasons. It’s unacceptable though, and personally harms me.
My old roommate. He would make like 20 chicken drumsticks in the night/evening, eat one or two of them, and then leave them to sit out all night only to throw them away in the morning. It did not just happen once, he did it like at least 4 times. Huge waste of food.
He also once cooked [my!] ground beef with 0 seasoning, literally just in a pan. And while he has that plain ground beef sitting in a container in the fridge, he started defrosting another pound of MY beef. What are you going to use it for?? You already have plain ground beef that you cooked literally yesterday!?!?
He also had this ancient and suffering blind & deaf chihuahua who wore diapers, and he would leave the dirty diapers in the most random places including on top of the electricity utility box in front of the house where everybody can see it.I did not even believe in idiots/stupid people until I met this guy. He was also a big fan of Charlie Kirk, by the way.

196@lemmy.blahaj.zone•[question] anilist vs myanimelist vs animeplanet etcEnglish
1·4 months agoPersonally I find that the more anime I watch and the more “anime-literate” I become, I naturally develop a kind of backlog regardless of recommendation algorithms. For example: I watch Mawaru Penguindrum -> I search up the director -> I find out that director Ikuhara is famous for making several other interesting surreal anime -> Yurikuma Arashi, Sarazanmai, and Revolutionary Girl Utena added to the backlog.
I also definitely get a lot out of browsing random people’s profiles and adding stuff that they have on favorites (I have like 45 profiles bookmarked in my browser). This is personally my favorite way to find stuff, just jumping between reviews and profile and conversations in comments.
And then of course there’s other sites where you can find recommendations like lemmy, r/anime, or Youtube. It’s hard to find good anitube nowadays, but there’s still some really good channels out there if you dig. ZNoteTaku and The Bellman are some of my favorites that I’ve found. Trixie the Golden Witch, too. Maybe STEVEM, hazel, and I’ve heard kenny lauderdale is supposed to be good. (This could be its own thread).
But anyway I’m kinda rambling. There’s plenty of ways to find recommendations. Personally I don’t find recommendation algorithms necessary. But if you do, then maybe stick to AniList or MAL. Personally I use MAL but it doesn’t really matter. If you have friends with anime lists, use whatever they use.

196@lemmy.blahaj.zone•[question] anilist vs myanimelist vs animeplanet etcEnglish
5·4 months agoTake a look at the user interface of each one and see what you prefer. MAL / AniList users tend to have a strong preference for one UI over the other (I’m on team MAL for that one). I’m not very familiar with animeplanet but I’d also recommend checking out Kitsu.io (or Kitsu.app now, I guess) especially if you want to log western animation like Avatar TLA, My Little Pony, or Arcane.
