The true purpose of life is two-fold
-
To Love. Your family, your spouse, your children, your friends, hobbies, pets, life and things of all forms, whatever it is you love, love them hard and with reckless abandon.
-
To leave the world a lil’ bit better than the way you found it. Whatever it is, whatever is within your power to change, change it for the better. For the betterment of mankind, nature, the planet, the universe, and for the people and animals that will come after.

Fuck AI@lemmy.world•‘Tidal wave’ of Pfas being launched to satisfy AI industry, campaigners warn
16·2 days agoAlready the chemicals are thought to contaminate the blood of nearly every living person. Research links them to cancer, liver disease, kidney issues, high cholesterol and birth defects.
Despite alarm over the chemicals, which have been linked to cancer, a survey of the 10 biggest manufacturers found most had plans to increase production.
Many frame their investments around the “AI revolution”, because of the role Pfas play in semiconductor production and next-generation datacentre cooling systems.
But opponents warn that the chemicals, which never degrade in nature, are a ticking timebomb for human and planetary health.
It’s funny that they call them “opponents” instead of “every health professional.”
And the US Pfas producer Chemours was expanding to meet demand from “advanced datacenters and AI hardware”. It said its “innovative liquid cooling solutions” lower the energy, water, space, maintenance and investment costs of datacentres.
Critics have said Chemours – recently ordered to pay $450m to settle a lawsuit over Pfas discharges – downplays the chemicals’ toxicity and climate impact.
Chemours! you know, the 3M subsidiary that knew that Pfas was accumulating in peoples blood and causing cancer all the way back in the 70’s, but they sat on their internal studies showing this and continued producing it anyway! They approved of using Pfas to line food containers all while knowing it would shed into humans and cause cancer! Neat!
Now they’re planning on making even more because they want to get in on the AI bubble before it pops! Oh but all that Pfas will already be in our environment, destroying the planet by the time the bubble pops, and then it will remain in our environment and in our bodies forever! Neat! They’re literally giving you cancer because it makes them money!

13·4 days agoIn 1948, the Atomic Energy Commission—the predecessor to the Department of Energy—declassified a study on gamma radiation’s effects on the blood of workers at Los Alamos National Laboratory, a key site in the development of the atomic bomb. But the agency’s insurance branch moved to block its release. The reasoning? It could shatter employee morale and “place a powerful weapon in the hands” of attorneys, who might file a lawsuit on behalf of sick workers. By then the government had also conducted experiments in hospitals—including one near its nuclear facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee—that intentionally exposed patients to radiation without their knowledge.

23·16 days agoArguing for the legal production of CSAM is fucked up, even if it’s by an AI.
Also the article specifically states:
AI-generated CSAM may also present other challenges not raised by the government in this appeal. For example, researchers have found that “a major dataset used for training image-generating AI contained hundreds of CSAM images.” Thus, unlike the virtual CSAM at issue in Free Speech Coalition, the market for AI-generated virtual CSAM images may impact the demand for actual CSAM on which the AI models can train.
You’re wrong. We absolutely can draw the line here. And yes, it does harm children. allowing people to create, possess, and distribute CSAM, even if it’s AI-generated, will influence peoples willingness to act on their urges in real life, with real children. It’s not a stretch to consider that linkage. What you’re arguing for is shameful and disgusting.

5·16 days agoHere’s a Great Article about how the company 3M paid for internal studies to be done. Those internal studies showed that their PFAS chemical accumulated in human tissue, and caused cancer. The people in nice suits in the board room ignored their own studies, and then put that shit in everything, including food containers.
Evil people, in nice suits, sitting in a board room. They look like regular people. They sometimes act like regular people. They do evil. They’ve never faced accountability for their crimes against humanity.
