I remember a YouTube channel with some folks drop testing a bunch of phones using a drone - and some Motorola smartphone with a polymer display (IIRC) survived a much bigger drop than the 3310 did.

I think the 3310 got its reputation because it was ubiquitous and at the same time somewhat tough - but it’s nowhere near as tough as say some Ericssons before it or some Siemens models after. Maybe this is also backed by the fact that phones got progressively more brittle after that.

Naturally people reach for the low hanging fruit to make a joke.

I think it can, yes.

Back in high school I only had enough allowance money to maybe buy 1 or 2 CDs per month (given that I don’t spend that money for its primary purpose). There was no music streaming yet. During that time I’ve discovered countless bands through other sources and many of those bands I’ve followed since, been to concerts, bought merch and CDs later in time. So yes, if it wasn’t for those other sources, I would’ve probably never discovered all that music.

It’s context and time dependent. What would’ve been essential skills and knowledge 50 years might be just obsolete now.

There’s not all that much fact checking about something like that. It’s not like they claimed something and got one small detail wrong. It’s just a blanket statement that is unsubstantiated. Assuming they have common knowledge of the industry they’re in, it takes just one game that is not coin-operated and has some save functionality to make the original statement invalid.

I try to “vote with my wallet” on these things whenever I can.

I’ve got a suspicion that this is one of those “say something intentionally stupid so that everyone jumps on the train to correct you and create engagement”.
