Visa free programms are not just a way to get in more tourists. They are often part of international treaties (which often contain way more things with bigger importance than overtourism) or bilateral agreements, which guarantee the same thing in the other country. If a country limits the entry of citizens from another country, that country probably will alao limit down its own visa free programm for citizens of the first country. The countries suffering from overtourism often don’t have the treaty freedom to so this or don’t want to limit their own citizens travels.

So Visa agreements are mostly part of international politics. Changing that does change a lot more than just tourism, which is often not worth it.

Mhh, you are probably right. I’m really hesitant to invest more time into troubleshooting tailscale. My own tailscale connections at home are stable, and for troubleshooting at my family member I always have to drive and setup my notebook there.

Maybe I could try to setup wireguard directly in the fritzbox router at my family member. That might need less maintenance as running tailscale in a docker container, as it would remove the wireguard connection out of the NAS itself.

Opening a port directly gives me kind of an ick, because I don’t want to fiddle too much with the family members network. If something happens with it, I will be the one troubleshooting it, and I don’t need more work currently.

So Tailscale connection instability is not common? I don’t like debugging this, since the NAS is remote and I don’t have much time going to the family member again and again for this. It definitely is something on the remote site, since the tailscale connections at my home are stable.

A server is measured by its availability. To read content from it, it has to be available. While everyone could use a dedicated always-on device, thats not really the situation you are describing. So you would run the software on your phone/notebook/PC. Those are not always available on the internet.

If you post something to your 50 recipients (as you stated in another comment), they can only read it, if both of you are online. For asynchronous communication (like a post typically is), that is a lot to ask. Especially, if you want to have features like comments, that all your recipients can see.

If you move away from the typical social media principle, then you can have truly decentralized messengers. I think, that already exists.

Another problem with any decentralized approach is how to handle content moderation. It is necessary, since humans are messy. The more decentralized a system is, the harder it becomes to moderate. For example: How would you stop CSAM to be proliferated through it? Or even stop it to being send to you? If the software has some automatic replication feature to enhance availability, then this problem gets worse. Lemmy has had its own attacks with CSAM being posted to many servers. That can get you into legal trouble very fast.

The system prevents people this rich from going down. He could literally toss a coin on every decision and at the end of the year he will be richer than before. These people basically cannot stop themselves from getting richer.

Ok, then I misunderstood your arguments. I understood “Away from people” an argument for increasing the distance to wind turbines. They are already normally build 500 to 1500m away from people. I also saw it in my local context. In germany we had the conservatives argue for increasing the mandated distances further, triggered by the far rights hate for renewables, which would make it impossible to build them in large parts of the country.

When we talk about wind turbines vs datacenters, I think a big argument is the actual direct value for the community. Providing clean energy gives more and direct value to a community, while the AI datacenter are mainly bringing the benefit of slop. Both are done in the capitalism way, but Datacenters (especially AI DCs) are way farther away from the consumer.

Thats not what it is effectively saying though. It says, that if you suggest, that infrasound from wind turbines is a medical problem, then people will have medical problems. That is the nocebo effect for you, not infrasound.

Also: There are many other sources of infrasound in our lifes. For example using a car. Wind turbines at typical distances are about 75db while driving in a car is more like 100db. If you open one of the rear windows while driving 130db. Where are the adverse effects of these?

From the first scimming, I would not give much credit to that study. Only 29 participants. But most importantly it was not double blind. The participants where instructed on what exactly the study wanted to find out and could easily see, how far they where from the wind turbine at the testing sides. Thats a programmed placebo effect.

Also: They only measured at 2 sites. The outdoor site was only 20m from the wind turbine. That is a distance not even relevant to placement of wind turbines. The safety distance to the spinning blades will already be significantly higher, at least 100m. So the measurement at that side might be interesting, but irrelevant.

Wdym wasting their time? They will search your home and confiscate all electronics, including the hardware running your TOR exit node and your phone, and your PC, and your notebook, and your gaming consoles, and of course any of such devices belonging to all other members of your household. And even if they cannot found anything that you have done wrong, you won’t get your stuff back for a long time (think half a year to multiple years).

Seems more like they would be wasting your time. And your money.

I support this change. Hardware can also be relevant apart from thr typical servers/mini PCs. Recently I asked about possibilities for a self hosted video/audio doorbell and was met with really helpful answers. While this question could also have fitted into communities for smart homes, I still think it is a good fit here. Self hosting already is a rather broad term. We should not limit ourselves too much in its definition.

One problem can be, that the better fit community does not have enough active users, thus being unlikely to give a good answer. I think we should have a look at that before refering the user to that community.

It is already possible without a battery. The new door, that we are getting, can also be bought with an automatic lock, though its expensive. Probably because the eletrical lines are running cleverly through the hinges. Having the lock on the outer side, woukd probably make it cheaper
