Why would I want to die?

If Steam ever shuts down, an old Reddit post had info about a customer experience message chain where a Valve representive said they had contingency plans if that ever happens.

I’ve heard this rumor repeated many times, but I’ve never seen a real source. I doubt it’s something Valve could actually promise.

That’s precisely it though, we do live in a society, and as long as that’s the case, society needs some guardrails against abuse.

I think it is necessary to have some limitations to avoid people being pressured or coerced into ‘consenting’ to things they really shouldn’t. Because otherwise you’re going to get scenarios where it’s rather dubious to imagine someone really sincerely consented to getting killed.

Consider something like Squid Game. Every participant joined the games voluntarily, at least on paper. They’re even given the opportunity to leave, only for many of them to come back because their lives in poverty are that bad, and they have families who need the money, need it so badly that they’ll take such an extreme risk. So is that consent? Should that be a legal form of dueling? Or is the entire message of the show that it very much shouldn’t be?

I haven’t seen that one either, but I’ll assume it’s worse purely on the basis of not having Daft Punk.

I haven’t actually seen Tron: Legacy, but I assume the film cannot possibly be as good as the Daft Punk album it came with.

How does this work for anything made by more than one person, especially projects by a very large team?

A lot of users on this platform are vehemently opposed to AI in all forms. And people are even less interested in any excuses for why AI is fine when you do it. Do not expect any AI content to be well-received around here, period.

In addition, I would have a clause where if a work is not being made readily accessible even in those first 15 years (delisted from digital storefronts or streaming services, software not compatible with modern platforms, or 5+ years out of print for physical media), copyright is considered to be in a weaker state where piracy for personal/noncommercial use is legal.

I don’t think you realize how unrealistic it is to expect the entire userbase of Reddit to all collectively agree to get up and leave. Spez knew he didn’t have to worry about the impossible.

No leverage? I think having full control over the platform, the ability to boot out any moderators still protesting and force subs to reopen, is all the leverage.

There’s nothing any of us could’ve done to change the outcome. We voiced our displeasure, tried to protest, but Spez was able to quash all of it by forcing out anyone who didn’t accept it in the end.

The users did give up. I moderated one of the subs that took part in the blackout, and we got a lot of complaints from users over it.

The CEO threatened the Reddit mods that he would replace them if they didn’t reopen the subs, so nearly every mod reopened and everything went back to normal.

Well I think you just answered your own question, that’s exactly what happened to the 2023 Reddit API protest.

I moderated one of the large subs that took part in the protest. When the admins threatened us, that was the last straw for me to leave the platform.

Earlier this year I made a short video essay about how Dr. Mario’s garbage mechanics are unusually different from the rest of the versus puzzle genre. I think it’s my best work yet… but sadly it ended up as my worst view count.

I just finished another video about another versus puzzle game that I plan to publish tomorrow, but can’t share it quite yet so click the Dr. Mario one instead I guess.

That people are only pretending to be nice to me but are secretly mad at me behind my back.
