  • It’s pretty much the same kind of thing as Japanese schools portrayed in anime: the major points are often accurate, but the specifics are exaggerated and certain things get disproportionate focus, because those are the “most entertaining” parts.

Do many Japanese schools have culture festivals? Yes. Is it every Japanese highschoolers most important event of the year where major life changing events happen? No.

Do many US highschools have prom and homecoming? Yes. Is it the highlight of every teenager’s school experience? No.

It’s all based on something real, but it’s exaggerated, and definitely not a universal experience for everyone everywhere.

I should also note that the stereotypical American highschool you see in TV shows and movies is heavily modeled after 70s/80s/90s school life, because those are the people creating the shows/movies.

  • LLMs are being abused by grifters and ruining the world…

… but the false equivalency in this thread is staggering. Y’all really think the McDonald’s drive thru was running the same tech as the latest LLM models? You think they hooked every one of em up to the Internet with a GPT-5 subscription?

Quit making it easier for the tech bros to dismiss opposition to shitty “AI”. Pointing at this abject failure and saying “see?!? AI can’t take a burger order so how could it write good code?!?” is not helping anyone.

  • My brand is completely unique. That doesn’t mean I have the time or money to sue every schmuck who decides to impersonate me on whatever platform.

It is patently ridiculous to say “leave the most popular platform, which many, many users use as their only social platform, and communicate the fact that anyone on there isn’t you via less popular platforms”. You do understand the flaw in that logic, right?

As I said before, it is reasonable to ask this of highly successful people but it’s not reasonable to expect it, IMO. Especially not when their economic success isn’t just lining their own pockets but also feeding the families of every person who works for them.

You are trying to turn a complex, interconnected decision tree into something one-dimensional. It’s always tempting to reduce these things to a single axis but it is rarely appropriate

  • It’s not that I care what people on that platform think. It’s that I care what shows up in search engines and whether my brand is diluted by people other than me.

And that is exactly the same thing at stake for bands and the like.

Headlines don’t get unprinted. If Muse quit Facebook or Instagram, especially after already having a presence there, it would be trivial for someone to swipe their brand identity and start posting horrible shit to generate headlines. And that is a bell that can’t be unrung, in addition to having material cost to address if and when it happens.

And I haven’t even mentioned the network effect.

Brand management is really difficult and even more delicate. Maintaining a token presence on some of the most popular platforms in the world is a no-brainer for anyone who cares about their brand.

I think it’s fair to ask extremely popular, highly visible bands and such to take a stand and loudly quit these platforms.

I don’t think it’s fair to expect it of them.

  • Are you a videogame networking engineer? Because you’ve just handwaved away one of the most difficult challenges in gaming as if it were “duh that’s easy” level simple.

I can link you some GDC videos that talk about how hard this problem is if you want

ETA: Also you’ve only addressed memory modification attacks. This does not address external aimbots that read memory to determine enemy player position and then send legitimate-but-automated inputs to aim and shoot. How do you stop cheaters from doing this when they can see exactly how data is structured in memory, how values are obfuscated, etc?

  • Who knows at this point? There is no shortage of grifters or “true believers” so it’s hard to say. But having worked with several different LLMs across a variety of use cases, I can say for sure that none of them are being completely honest about their shortcomings. Each model has strengths and weaknesses, all of them have unresolved issues, and all of that stuff is being swept under the rug, with the products being touted as one-size-fits-all problem solvers.

Because it’s profit driven, not research driven. The people holding the reigns really don’t care about outcomes for the people using the products, only whether they can get paid for it.

  • I think the actual worst thing might be evidence of a widespread unresolvable regression problem in the model design.

If the model training is incapable of distinguishing between AI generated data and human generated data, and unable to identify accurate data from large quantities of inaccurate data, and they’ve known about this the whole time, and they can’t figure out how to keep the models up to date with ongoing information gathering without ingesting data into the models that is toxic to the model development and usefulness…

Well then LLM progression has an expiration date. And all this investment is for naught because in X years you won’t be able to train new models without doing further irreparable damage to functionality and usefulness of the models.

And if AI companies knew about this problem, this pending cliff they were going to fall off, didn’t inform investors, and promised continued growth they knew couldn’t be achieved without a major scientific breakthrough or technology pivot, that would be pretty fucking horrible for the business of LLMs and the economy.

I’m trying so hard not to hate this post but you have given me so many reasons to

    • use of UwU in something I absolutely need to share with others

    • mismatched fonts

    • comic something font

    • no human readable data next to the QR code

    • mismatched gradient radii in the corners

    Make it stop 😭

EDIT: For those who care, this comment falls into the category of “said in jest, meant in earnest”. I know it’s all on-brand and comedic, but my gut reactions are what they are 😂
