Microsoft claims its using ISO files, but writes proprietary extensions into them. That’s vendored so doesnt break the files but is outside standardization so limited interoperability and has some long term risk.

Important though, it makes libreoffice look like it doesn’t implement the standard which isn’t true.

They’re dealing with that by detecting these vendored chuncks and displaying a message block in the document and re-writing it on save to preseve it. it sounds like the wording is something similar to the blog post suggesting its a Microsoft Extension that may be supported in future releases or something but i havent seen it.

“from 2016 onwards” some of those dates after 2016 are pretty recent.

ive been seeing screenshots of the new vibe coded new tab replacement that are totally broken and the redesigned ui has overly rounded components that cover up text components and hard coded “ai” purple gradients that are nearly impossible to turn off with going into about:config…

So I have low expectations of this going well and seeing that second option in my future.

a number of years ago we got server that had a internal usb connection for the OS and an “enterprise” usb drive with redundant flash storage. so its an option and we tried it to get the extra exposure space since it was vendor supprted.

But also, the third time we went to replace the storage the vendor said they no longer supported that as an option… which they had never told us before. Even 10 year old servers they’d find parts for it.

so, maybe an enclosure with a traditional drive, but in wouldnt trust traditional usb or flash card usb storage for your os. just arent reliable enough for constant storage access.

I think we’ve all seen the enshitification playbook enough to know “accept or not now” just means its a matter of time before its not an option.

a lot of communities are aggressively clamping down on AI contributions. i think leaving the floodgates open really hasnt worked out. People touting “the kernel does it so get over it” gloss over the contributions being small and strict “your ai code reflects you and you own the consequences” policy.

additionally i dont buy the enterprise does it so get on board argument. the floss movement is literally built around pushing back on corporate norms. i dont know why anyone would take thay argument at face value.

for a lot of FLOSS communities, the ethics of the software is as important as the quality. which is why so many Debian community members felt betrayed by milquetoast ai policy adoption.

Graphene made a similar “look they’re all doing it too” argument on Mastadon which I feel just really undermines their image as the alternative.

“we dont police our developers usage as long as the quality meets out high standards. all code is at the end of the day ownedand reviewed by the humans in our teams” or some other equally silly statement would still have had critics but at least they wouldn’t sound like a grade schooler wining about how infair life is.

I have a memory of people black boxing it and seeing power usage and network traffic that supported the claims but that was a snapshot in time and as others note its all proprietary.

A decade ago I would e stoked. But with Google’s home platform wasting away, their integrations dead, and their blind push on “AI” at the cost of their entire platform working, it just makes me sad.

Also I have the previous model and the updates have just made it worse over time. It tried to set my thermostat to 265f last weekend. It looses timers sometimes which is not great in the kitchen. I barely use it anymore.

Also with chip prices sky rocketing, staying at $100 has some big red flags for capabilities…

I don’t have all the facts but based on the article I don’t see the problem everyone seems upset about.

They received the report, decided it was valid but didn’t match a bounty. Then asked him to follow standard responsible disclosure processes giving him credit in the final release. All very standard.

Should there have been a bounty? AMD has the budget, probably yes. But nothing in the communications seems any different from what I’ve seen and have received similar from companies in the past.

Setting aside for a moment my feelings on the current state of “AI” and AI coding, I don’t see that there would be a point. The next vibe refactor is likely to overwrite any changes I write so it’s unlikely to be useful to either the project or me.

I believe the current meta of SEO is seeing how far you can get prompt injecting your site into AI summaries via llms.txt. So… that’s cool too.
