As a CCTV enthusiast, I do not generally recommend ubiquiti cameras unless the person wants to wholly live in the unifi ecosystem.

They’re very pricey for what you get, even though they are pretty good. They’re most often not even near the best in class despite their price, though (looking at you, doorbell camera)

They also don’t play nice with open/self hosted NVRs. It’s getting better due to consistent demand, but the reality is that they’re at their best when you use unifi protect, on unifi devices. So IMO it’s all or nothing, and since there’s a lot better value in other brands, I choose not to use them anymore.

No, I really wouldn’t be surprised because I’ve been vaping for a decade, starting from enthusiast roots with high end mods and coil builds and then settling down into refillable tanks and off the shelf atomizers and juice.

As a former smoker I used ecigs to get off of nicotine by tapering down my nic content until I’m vaping 0 nic, which is HARD TO FIND on the shelf because nobody wants it. A lot of time the juice flavors are off/spoiled because they’re sitting for so long.

It’s NOT very common. Does it happen? Yes. But the whole thing is a pain in the ass and it doesn’t “look cool” like smoking did at one point, so kids aren’t just doing it for style points.

Alaska has a really interesting rail system that was built during the gold rush specifically to get people into remote parts of the state that were otherwise almost completely inaccessible at the time.

There’s tons of remote villages that don’t have trains still mind you, but my point is that if there’s a will there’s a way. Right now airlines and fuel are subsidized and encouraged by the govt to keep costs down, which relieves development demand for rail. Flip the incentives and rail could theoretically take off in the USA; but that requires politicians with stones and a will to do good instead of… Whatever they are right now.

Terminating antennas doesn’t usually work in areas with good cell service. Traces on PCBs are good enough to transmit/receive to towers unless you’re in a rural area.

Before you decide on what to do, I recommend you read the 5 Love Languages book. It’s a good and easy read and I’d recommend it anyways. Bottom line is people express affection in certain ways and they like to receive affection in certain ways. The reason I suggest the book is because it can help you key in on whether going expensive is something that will be valued by your SO.

If receiving gifts, expensive ones, isn’t one of her love languages, I’d say it’s probably not worth it. But if she lights up when she’s showered with expensive stuff normally then there’s nothing wrong with a giant diamond, if you can afford it. It’s a gift so it should be something that she will appreciate

It might be more meaningful if it’s a custom ring that you have a jeweler design. Maybe an animal she loves or something else that is meaningful. This can be cheaper than a diamond center stone even if you include a variety of gems. Price scales hugely with size of the stone so you can go hog wild with smaller gems and the cost of the metals and the design/creation and not break the bank.

On the subject of asking for her hand or whatever, I think the more modern way to do the same thing is to just get with her parents before hand and let them know what your intentions are.

At the end of the day, do what you want. You can stick to traditions and get a big diamond ring and ask get Father’s hand if that’s what you want. People, especially here, will get out pitchforks and try to tell you why that’s bad or whatever but at the end of the day traditions are traditions and if you want to do it that way it’s OK. But I wouldn’t do it just because it’s tradition - unless that means something to you. Be deliberate in your choices whatever they are.

There’s some merit to the fact that the transportation carbon footprint due to the weight of paper bags vs plastic, when adjusted by volume of usable storage space, can lead to situations where it’s “better” for the environment on the near-medium term to go with plastic. I don’t know exactly where that line is, but intuitively you can imagine what I’m talking about (you can fit SO much more plastic bags in a truck and they’re lighter, so less fuel and storage requirements for the same capacity of… Bag)

However, there’s a ton of indirect, non-carbon footprint, negative externalities that comes with disposable plastic bag use that more than outweigh (no pun intended) any potential circumstances where it might be “cleaner” to use disposable plastic bags vs paper.

The thing is, these comparisons are very very rarely as simple as people want them to be, they’re complicated with a lot of down/upstream considerations that are hard to identify, quantify, and communicate holistically to the general public.

Really what would be great is just using reusable woven natural fiber bags and baskets. Paper, especially at the quality used for grocery bags and the like, is pretty sustainable at this point, but paper mills are pretty dirty in general and any reduction in their output is good of course.

Twine bags, bamboo baskets, etc etc. Even reusable plastic is better, but getting away from plastic is best.

We will always need plastics for things, they are INCREDIBLE and versatile, so let’s save their use for what we need them for and get rid of using them for everything under the sun just 'cuz.

I totally agree with you, but that problem is way harder to solve than LLMs and music generation.

We got LLMs and music/image generators first because there’s so much written information, music recordings, and images to train models on. There’s practically zero data about how your body moves when you’re washing dishes and what it looks like in the sink, what a dirty plate looks like or a clean one, so we can’t just train robots to do it yet except in extremely specified environments with as few variables as possible.

There’s a lot of advancement in this area, trying to solve these problems. Robotics is a very exciting field of advancement these days. Automated dish cleaning machines exist that don’t use AI, but they’re industrial and expensive. If you want something that uses dawn, a sponge, elbow grease, and your particular style and height and form factor of kitchen sink, we need a lot of data about people washing dishes to train models on.

At least, at this point we do. We will probably get to a point where an AI enabled robot can learn new manual tasks, but think about how long it took YOU, a human, to develop and learn motor function and coordination. All that motor telemetry data, input sounds, sights, and tactile sensations are handled by your brain silently, and we take it all for granted. But it’s all built off a lifetime of your brain taking input data and processing it so you can run the biomechanical series of squishy meat levers and pulleys to wash the dishes.
