It forces people to give back to LGPL code. It is a weak copy left. I do not know what you mean by being GPL.
If they were LGPL from the start, yes, that probably would solve it.

Do you know about the LGPL license? I think it allows you to statically link proprietary code, and the LGPL code remains open while the closed code remains closed. Modified and distributed lgpl still remain under the LGPL.

Windows is now using uutils for their coreutils. I want to see if Microsoft gives back anything to the project with that permissive license. Also, aren’t canonical and Microsoft partners or something? I saw the Ubuntu wsl news.

Just want to let you know from my canoebooted laptop that I run a 100% “free as in freedom” OS (trisquel GNU/Linux). Also you have convinced me about striving for a goal instead of doing it perfectly, which is not possible. Well said.


NetBSD is more portable than Linux and supports a lot of CPU architectures. OpenBSD is secure by default. I think the BSD’S have jails, which are better containers, but I do not know much about it.
For desktop daily use, it only matters if you really want that Unix taste.


What about openBSD? I doubt the most secure OS would want llm code.


Is there another GPL OS instead? I am a fan of the GNU Hurd, but sadly I cannot run it on my hardware. The team of devs is really small, and it is amazing what they have done in all these years.


NetBSD already runs a lot of the satellites out there.


I have also heard of solaris, but never had a clue what it was.
I am pretty sure that is the enterprise OS owned by Oracle. It is closed source.
All I want is an os I can trust, that is logical, works, and stays out of my way.
NetBSD or openBSD is your best bet. You will have to install the desktop environment yourself though, unless you like their cwm. FreeBSD is the most popular BSD, but they are using AI to find security vulnerabilities.
Ubuntu is fine. When you get your PC, you can see for yourself and decide. If Ubuntu just works for you, stick with it, if it is a bad experience, try another GNU/Linux distro. Be aware though that the back end of the appstore in Ubuntu is proprietary/closed-source/nonfree/bad.
