But even if you’re not using Play Store to pay, the vast majority of people who are paying are going to be using the same device/IP/fingerprint/etc. where Signal is running, so it’s not impossible to put the two together to link an account to a specific payment, if say, a government forced them to do so in order to track someone. It’s just a bad idea for several different privacy reasons.

You don’t want to have to use a payment method at all… the problem with not having a phone number is there is no way to tie the account to someone who is responsible for the content, and Signal does not want the liability nor the spam traffic, of potentially harmful traffic (in whatever sense that may mean).
Or if you want the tinfoil hat response… they need/want to tie your account to a real identity for surveillance purposes, and they can’t do that if there is no phone number, so they use a payment record instead. (I made all that up and have no idea if it’s true)

Yes, but will you really be happy if none of the people you want to talk to will use the same service? I would argue popularity does matter to a lot of people in a way that can still affect you.

Yes I have read the stories that people always point to as their “proof”, and 1. I think everyone twists his (poorly chosen) phrasing to fit a specific narrative that is not reflective of any actual intent, and 2. I don’t believe he actually wants to hurt anyone.
As far as I know, nobody has confronted him about these posts and gotten any clarification of his intent, they just want to crucify and not believe any other perspectives because it fuels their confirmation bias.

To me, complaining about too many immigrants does not inherently imply someone is racist, xenophobic or claiming anyone doesn’t have a right to exist (the most common criticisms I see from his “proof” posts) as countries do need a healthy balance of immigration to work well… too much or too little can both be problematic for several different reasons that have nothing to do with where they came from or what they look like.
Imagine if people called you racist simply because the community/culture you grew up around is what you’re used to and no longer what’s all around you, and you never asked for such change… of course some people won’t like it, but that doesn’t mean they dislike the people themselves, just the situation.
I’m not playing defense for any particular perspective, I just try to understand all sides and get other people to see different perspectives before forming their own opinions.

They can… as I said they control the entire OS. They can see you’re running Signal with account# XYZ, that you clicked the pay button, that Signal generated the ZKP (which they can read in memory or network packets), and all the key clicks of the payment details you entered for which ZKP, the entire process.
