I think there’s value in encouraging him to fill his time with positive things. Instead of “that phone is making you crazy” you pitch “wouldn’t this be fun, or nice, or interesting.” Lots of townships, municipalities, or counties have programs designed for seniors to get out, be active, and interact. And at least if he meets people that’s an opportunity to spend more time offline.

What are his hobbies or interests? Most places have senior centers with programs that involve getting people together for activities.

Though I’m not sure if him spending time with a bunch of other senior men is going to solve this issue.

You may want to point him to recent articles about how shady interests are paying people all over the world to post right wing US talking points to US social media via VPNs.

Or how social media algorithms are design for engagement and that promotes rage baiting content most of all.

Any kind of hobby that gets him off screens for hours a day.

Even a solitary one like model railroads or model building would be better than spending time online.

For those who don’t know Realistic is an old Radio Shack brand. Because their users were tech savvy they came with full repair manuals detailing schematics, parts lists, assembly diagrams, etc…

This all makes it extremely easy to repair. I recently replaced the capacitors after it became apparent the direct drive was unstable. There was no question what I needed to order or where exactly it needed to go.

Slackware is becoming a bit long in the tooth. Updates are slow, which means security fixes are slow.

Wholeheartedly support this and am looking forward to it. But part of me is sad to lose Slackware. Entirely for nostalgia reasons. It was the first Linux distro I really dug in on and used regularly. First distro I set a server up on so very long ago. It was kind of nice always having there in the background on Unraid.

The price increased 4 times over the previous price.
