But why are those not interesting for this study? It kinda feels like the question they want to answer is “how many teenager are having premarital sex, i.e. dirty sinners” instead of “what is people’s age of first sex”. Which would also mean that lots of teenagers would feel encouraged to claim that they’re virgins when they actually aren’t.

  • My first thought is that that kind of location also makes invading harder. For thousands of years, armies had to acquire most of their provisions on the road because logistics are hard when you’re marching thousands of people on foot, and “acquire” usually meant “steal” even on home territory.

Being invaded fucking sucks, so it’s quite possible that a lot of people were willing to trade personal liberty for security.

  • Females (man I hate using that word, but “girls” or “women” don’t really seem appropriate here, either) have similar numbers, I kind of doubt that most of them had boyfriends in their early 20s, or a similar incentive to lie about it.

Either way, the “early 20s” claim is unsourced and pretty far from what’s generally accepted, so there’s just no reason to believe it.

  • If the devices don’t have any broken parts, you could keep at least one of them around as a backup for when your main PC has issues. 2008 laptops are still perfectly fine for e.g. Linux + Libreoffice, and you could load them with a bunch of offline stuff like dictionaries, a text-only wikipedia backup, CD/DVD-based enzyclopedia etc. - this could be quite valuable if your home net becomes infested by malware. I also kept using my old laptop for a long time specifically for its optical drive, because every once in a while I buy second-hand music CDs.

Though in my case, the issue is that my old devices all had hardware issues. My ~2008 laptop has a completely broken keyboard, and a netbook from the same era doesn’t even turn on anymore. Most of my old phones have broken screens etc., and the really old ones are unusably slow (maybe I could remedy that by installing a really old android version). TBF, my current laptop is from 2015 and it doesn’t look like it’s going to stop working anytime soon.
