Nothing you just said was an argument against user friendly software. The Windows and Mac hostage situation was created by familiarity and walled gardens, and is solved by Linux becoming easier to use.

Friendlier defaults, graphical package manager included out of the box, some tasks will benefit from packages that can use the instructions on your cpu. I can’t see a single advantage of Endeavour over Cachy.

I think it’s worth exploring; the culture is more important than the tech. What are the societal systems that are driving resistance, how is access to STEAM distributed, how does this affect the lives of ‘normal’ people.

The main reason the the ‘punk’ subgenres coexist is that their technologies form a feedback loop with their cultures which makes them different and allows for different stories. What are the impacts of STEAM on society and how is this different to Cyberpunk with modern tech?

Aesthetic is also important because it captures the imagination and gives the genre staying power. There’s a reason that Cyberpunk and Steampunk are the most popular, while Biopunk hasn’t had the same impact.

Unfortunately for Bethesda these are narrative subgenres as well as aesthetic ones, and modern Bethesda can’t write.

What would be punk about it?

Steampunk is Steam (victorian inspired tech) + Punk (victorian inspired inequality)

Cyberpunk is Cyber (80s inspired tech) + Punk (80s inspired inequality)

I’m more concerned about people who don’t do that regularly and think ‘don’t worry; I’ll ask Google’

It’s not so great when the only available digital manual is a jpg scan from a printed version. There’s also no way to tell what other sources an LLM is using when it generates its summary, and when you’re dealing with things that are important to get right, like voltage, you have to just read the manual/specifications.

Until you lose your manual and need to look up the information online, hoping to find the manual or relevant info you are first presented with this.

It’s not really designed to be a Discord replacement. It’s a messaging app/protocol that can do voice/video calls. Discord is a passive state voice / video / text channel app that was designed to create spaces for different topics. Matrix has added a similar hierarchical feature as an option, but its not the same and I don’t think it was meant to be.
