The threat of AI is unknown and unsure. Climate change is going to kill or severely harm billions, in the next 100 years, and we know this for a fact. Conservative media wants to distract from their massive failures with a new boogeyman, they just randomly rolled one that might actually be a problem in the future.

Wouldn’t doubt it, “commie news network” CNN was absolutely blasting democratic candidates while letting conservatives on to spout 30 minutes of lies with no pushback, so they’d seem “fair.” Made 0 difference conservatives still say they are unbelievably biased. I ask them “why is trump calling for the deaths of politicians if you agree there’s too much political violence and dissonance?” Well they didn’t hear it on fox news that he called for their deaths so it’s probably the woke media lying. They will ask for everything and give nothing.

And also they don’t care that much so they won’t look into it (look into it, i.e. click 1 link to his post calling for politicians to be killed). And even if he did do it he was probably joking. And even if he wasn’t they found 1 insane person on YouTube who is calling for people’s deaths too, which is the same as the president that they elected saying it to hundreds of millions of people I guess.

I think I would doubt they’re mentally all there if they said hey eat me after I die, but assuming they were then I don’t see a problem with it.

Hard disagree, I’ve met some super nice people who have 0 friends because they’re just shy and awkward or have anxiety, or are just plain weird. You can’t expect those people to be open and sociable when they hardly ever talk to people. Add on to that you have to make a huge effort to meet new people when you’re an adult, things being so online, loss of 3rd spaces, and that covid socially stunted so many people.

Sadly this is all medicine, I lost so much faith in it as soon as it wasn’t “extremely obvious problem with extremely obvious solution.” For the brain, it’s a much worse situation because we understand it so little. It turns into “throw random ideas at it and hope one works” and a lot of people are just lonely or needed lifestyle changes so it “works” for them :/

I got banned from a ton of ai communities for some mild push back, saying that people value bad art that has a person behind it rather than AI art which doesn’t feel like it has a human story and character behind it. Some of the softest people on the whole fediverse.

Yes which is why I’m not against ai as a whole, just in its current form it needs massive regulations. I would still not be happy about how it’s ruined huge portions of the internet, but I would probably put up with that for the value it provides.

Sure not all the critique is accurate, but in its current form, it causes huge issues with water and noise pollution in places the data centers are built, and are sucking unbelievable amounts of power, while essentially DDOSing tons of sites to scrape data, and often using copyrighted material that they have no license for. It is also reducing people’s ability to think critically because people turn to it immediately.

I’m not an idiot who will say it’s not useful, but we need to slow down by about 20x with what we’re doing with it now, and save it mainly for medical usage until we have a solution to those massive problems.

To your first point, it’s actually not legal, and possessing even drawn cp has been treated as a similar crime (which imo is incredibly stupid).

In the case of AI, the training data often included real CSAM material, so it’s more like I viewed csam (illegal) then drew it from memory (still illegal but less so).

Humans are given the benefit of “I gathered this data and created a new thing out of it” because that’s beneficial to humans. I’m not going to say that humans creating something is magically different from how an AI does, but it’s training on often stolen data and/or throttling tons of websites to scrape their data against the wishes of the hosters. It’s like if I steal a movie and then make my own movie slightly based on it, the problem isn’t my movie, it’s the process to get to it (and that it’s a human who is benefitting from the result).

The difference for the cold war was it was an imminent, visible threat, that short term decisions could change, where it is beneficial to all parties to prevent it. Climate change is just about the opposite in every possible way.

There was uncertainty of what might happen in the cold war, but this time we have near certainty that there will be extreme consequences due to climate change, the uncertainty is what other negatives might come with it.

It’s a little annoying that staying the reality is “doomerism” when I’m still actively fighting against it, and I think it’s a bit harmful to compare it to other situations where we weren’t so absolutely certain of the extreme consequences we will face. If the building is on fire you don’t say it’s not to prevent panic, you want people to know how serious it is.

You have to live in reality idk what to say, if black people commit more crime in an area I want to have that information so I can figure out why so I can prevent it (outreach programs specifically targeted at black kids for instance), if you say it as a dogwhistle to other racists that’s a different story.

I think genZ is absolutely cooked for different reasons (AI, social media, tiktok, covid lockdowns during a critical part of development) and I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re also an at-risk group to scams.

If your goal is to dogwhisle or denigrate based on identity then yes that’s wrong, but old people are the majority of the voting block and they majority voted for Trump. Saying “old people are racist and closed-minded” is false. Saying “old people are NOT racist and closed-minded” is even more false.

All groupings are arbitrary, it just (sometimes) provides utility to group on some shared attributes. It would be more accurate to say boomers trust ai more, not because they’re necessarily stupider (though lead poisoning was extremely common through leaded gasoline), but being older does mean you had less access to multiculturalism, less inundation with scams and technology growing up, and more propaganda that is harder to find counterpoints to.

It’s fully accurate to say “older people generally are more close-minded and trust AI more” without that being an attack on any particular old person. That’s a reality old people and young people need to be aware of, whether it’s for an older person to reflect if that’s happening to them, or a younger person to help an older person with.

Older people aren’t stupid and awful, they are just generally more set in their ways, and factually ARE more vulnerable to misinformation and lies, which is why they’re the most vulnerable to scams.

The previous generation, at least in America, was far more repressed and had far less access to information than we do today, which results in more narrow-minded beliefs. Not all old people are like this, but the comment you’re talking about said “old people don’t trust ai” which is not true. Old people as a group do, this person as an individual in that group does not.
