Jellyfin player’s UI in TV mode reacts only to up/down/left/right and enter and escape. you can use InputRemapper if your weapon of choice isn’t recognized. also, jellyfin android apps connect to the player directly and you can control it from there.

the cheapest and best solution is to grab a busted-up laptop from your marketplace. broken screens, keyboards, missing batteries, whatever, you won’t use none of those things. make sure it’s skylake (6th gen) or newer for hardware video acceleration and on-board LAN and HDMI, the rest is unimportant. you’ll have an insanely powerful and power-efficient platform that you control 100% of and can tweak to your heart’s desire, expand, fix, etc. I’d be surprised if you can’t find several for under $40, power brick included.
my go-to setup is auto-launching jellyfin player in TV mode with macast running in the background (DLNA sink you can send youtube videos and the like). since you’ll have computing power to spare, this can also be a server, whatever you desire.

I had posts that received a barrage of downvotes and I let 'em be. had posts where the conclusion differed from what was originally intended and I’d let them be as there was value in the resolution. this was none of them things, no chance anyone would find this useful.

my machine lags yours by about 7-8 generations and has zero problems with the same task. I’ve imported 15+ 20+ years worth of emails from multiple gmail accounts into a local server’s dovecot IMAP server (and thunderbird has a local copy). no part of that thing freezes or does anything of the sort OP describes.

the “turn off” that’s mentioned, that’s handled with CEC; but it turns off only the TV, correct? if it also turns off the player, how do you turn it back on with just a gamepad?

you’re not passing dri and render128 to docker, how is this supposed to work? as X client?
to anyone else looking for a bit better security wrt gaming, you can limit home folder exposure to wine with winetricks sandbox (eliminates links to anything but c: inside the prefix) and firejail --net=none as command prefix, to disable network access. the latter obv doesn’t work with flatpak lutris/heroic/steam.
buncha folks are running linux on macbooks, but their experience will be of little use to you as T2 macbooks are hella complicated in that regard.
the wifi going away, unless it’s the published fix on t2linux (restart NetworkManager on resume via systemd), is something you need to describe in more detail.
never had/heard issues wrt trackpad, I’d have to look into that.
not waking after sleep promptly is due to softlocks on the CPU; it will wake eventually. if you’re not happy with that, there’s a short script that shuts all cores off prior to standby and reactivates them on wake; that puts the wake time to a coupla seconds.
yeah, nvram GfxMode= and reboot enables it
my mistake, oneplus 6 is. was sure f1 was also there but now I see it isn’t.
the thing with halium is you have better hardware compatibility as android can use the OEM blobs, whereas you have more modern kernels, software, etc. with postmarketOS/mobian but worse hardware issues, e.g. cameras mainly.
so based on that, choose your fighter. good luck
are you looking to get a phone at this stage? then skip that one and go for a Poco F1 or Oneplus 6/6T. those run the way more powerful SDM845, have faster storage, available in 6 or 8 GB RAM, and most important, have the widest suport for other linuxes, postmarketOS and mobian, as well as UT. prices should be in the same ballpark, as all of those are close to 10 years old; if you can choose, F1 can be opened way easier for battery replacement.
those two run native mainline linux whereas UT runs on Halium (that’s like android + linux in a VM). also !linuxphones@lemmy.ml
edit: haven’t answered the question - 6 GB is obv more than enough for normal use; 4 GB ain’t.
had a bunch of those. the best thing you can do is disable the nvidia graphics and run it off the intel graphics, plenty powerful for everyday tasks, lower power consumption, less heat, longer battery life. only downside, you lose display out.
after that, any linux distro will suit you just fine. go with fedora for newest and best or debian for safe and boring.
you can load any live USB to RAM, if you got enough of it. use
rd.live.ram(fedora) ortoram(debian/ubuntu) and you can remove the USB afterwards and have a superfast “install”
